Bangkok Police Enforcing Nightlife Closing Times

Message to all the costumers and people travelling to Patong, Phuket

All night life businesses will close at 2 am for the next 2 or 3 days due to a Bangkok police control.

This was posted by a nightclub in Patong, does anyone know why this is being enforced at the height of high season? I thought that Patong and Kata/Karon had a special tourist permit to allow for later opening hours?

It has to do with "Pla Wan" almost getting killed at 4:30 am in Phuket Town.

yes that did have the royal family involved so maybe they have ordered the crack down.

Don't jump to confusions...don't forget we have a new Police Commander...such events are inevitably followed by a crackdown.

From this article a quote from the Phuket Provinical Police commander:

“After the fight at Rachada pub I issued official letters to the the superintendents of all eight police stations in Phuket, including Phuket City, Patong and Chalong, ordering them to strictly enforce closing times at nightlife venues in their areas of jurisdiction,” he said.

The closing-time crackdown would have been issued even if the Rachada pub stabbing had not taken place, he stressed.

A new provincial police inspection unit will be making surprise inspections across the island to ensure compliance with the order.

If this actually does happen, I wonder if the management of certain large establishments that are open well past 2am will be on for paying less monthly "tea money?" After all, profits will be down and they will be complying with the law.

Also, if it does happens, tourist will be pretty shocked to find out that there is nowhere to drink after 2am.

I can hear all the non-drinkers now - "2am is late enough." "they should all be shut at 12." etc etc etc etc The thing is, there will be an increase in "street drinking" and that can cause more problems than late closing nightclubs. Also, an increase in "balcony parties" which cause complaints from people trying to sleep in other rooms.

I bet 7/11 and Family Mart are happy with the new police commander. :) :)

But these stores also comply with the alcohol sales restrictions 11.00 - 14.00 & 17.00 - 02.00

It's the mom & pop stores that will win, and good luck to them.

Ahhh, yes. I never thought of that because I have never actually seen them abide by the law. :) :) I agree. Good luck to the mum and pop stores.

I do have a question. If I stayed in a big hotel (I don't - but if I did) can the hotel's lobby bar or pool side bar etc etc sell me alcohol after 2am? If they can, would you have to be staying in a room in the hotel, or could they serve anyone off the street? I guessing you would have to be staying in the hotel.

The reason I ask is, if the new police commander enforces this law constantly and consistantly (which I don't think he will) we may see a rise in customers in small farang run hotels who put in a small bar downstairs, or, a HUGE increase in people checking in at 2am (on the books) at a MASSIVELY discounted price, in order to be able to keep drinking and socialising.

I'm sure everyone can see where I'm going with this. :) :) If a hotel can sell alcohol to it's "lodgers" after 2am, it could actually spread the cash a little more evenly around the island, instead of the few big nightclubs open till sunrise having a monopoly.

That could be a whole new? concept.

Setup an non fancy resort, where party goers come for drinks and mingle.

Entrance would be 500 bath which would grant a bed in a dormitory. Some extra for the private room, when a customer feels lucky.

Resort would get money from the drinks and breakfast which would kill the hangover next day.

Customers would drive back home after suffering the hangover, maybe 4pm. Which would result less drunk and driving.
