New British Passport

Featured Replies

Hello

I find myself with only a page left in my passport. Im told it will take 6 weeks to get a new one from Thailand ... im told its two if I do it in Hong Kong.

Does anyone have any recent experience with this process ?

Any suggestions for a business person needing to travel ?

Can this process be fasttracked ...besides going back to the UK ?

thx

You cannot get a British Passport in Thailand, the application is sent to Hong Kong, the passport is sent from the UK

Hong Kong you can get a new passport.

If you apply from Thailand like I did it took about 16 days, forms can be downloaded I think or get them from the UK Embassy or a Consulate.

I sent mine (Hong Kong) late last year and it took almost two months

If you call the HK embassy they may help. They helped me (it would have been even longer) because my visa was soon to expire.

mine from HKG took about 14 days, but it was at the time of HKG stopping sending them out, so I was maybe a bit lucky.

I got a new one after they started sending them from the UK, but I still had to apply to Hong Kong. This is the same situation as now.

It took about three and a half weeks, so I got it back 2-3 days before the full four week estimated time.

You don't need to send your passport off with the application but if you run out of pages then you will be stuck in Thailand until the new passport returns and there will be an overstay fine.

I know it won't be much help to you in this instance but for future consideration if you travel quite a bit maybe it's worth considering applying for a second passport, if travelling quite often a new passport can be filled up with visas/entry and exit stamps probably within 3 years or so, at least if you have 2 passports you shouldnt have issues with being left short

Use a good visa agent that only charges a little more to check your papers are filled out correctly, photo sizes are correct and issue you with a DHL tracking number from Thailand to Hong Kong and back so you can track where your documents are. I normally do everything myself where possible but for a few baht more i chose to let them do it all for me, nice and convenient and stress free.

Why not chance it and send the passport direct to the UK for renewing (when was the last time you had to show the original as opposed to a copy ?) - mind you it may be a good idea to give the return address of a relative/friend in the uK and ask them to forward it to you ?

My 10 year passport was due to expire in June 2013, however I have travelled so frequently (hehe) that I ran out of space for visa, plus the gold coat of arms, had worn away so badly that the UKBA at Manchester, told me it was technically damaged.

I got a new 48 page passport this time, I just have to try and get them to stick the luggage tags stickers on a cover of the passport, rather than wearing away at the gold on the front cover.

I got my new replacement passport by appointment in liverpool next working day cost a little over £140 all in I remember.

Well worth it.

You can apply for a second passport if you have good reason. A good reason would be if you intend to make frequent trips to both Egypt and Israel or from Cyprus and Turkey. The reasons should be obvious, but they will issue 2 passports with the same passport number, I believe, identical in every way or so a friend of mine claimed.

Mine have different numbers and are totally independent of one another apart from the passport service knowing.

The Thai immigration computers also made the connection between me and the two passports somewhere over the years.

Interestingly, the site where I downloaded the sample justification letter (sorry forgotten where it was) suggested that travel to incompatible countries should not be used as a reason but simply that regular travel to countries requiring visas would be sufficient, worked OK for me.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

My own personal experience recently, when the application was made to Hong Kong, and the new passport printed and sent from the UK was 5 weeks.

Last year when assisting friends, the average time was 6/7 weeks when Hong Kong processed AND printed the passports.

The courier charges (mandatory) are expensive, as you also receive the receipt from Hong Kong by courier! However, even the couruer transfers it to EMS from Bangkok.,

A right scam!

190+GBP for a new 48 page passport! Double the UK price!

Sans same Crossy, two different passport numbers, I got a covering letter from my company when applying for my second passport, basically requesting second passport and the reason being the company require to make visa applications on my behalf sometimes in quick succession and requested for second passport on this basis,,

not meaning to stray from original OP but it would be interesting to find if it's possible to get a new non imm o thai visa on the second passport before visa expiry date of the thai visa in the first passport
