We are planning a trip to the UK and would like to visit Europe and would prefer not to have to go to Bangkok to get a visa for my Thai wife. (she already has a UK visitors 5 year visa)

Can we get a Schengen visa in Chiang Mai?

German consulate in Baan Nai Faan if you're going to Germany. I believe you're supposed to spend most of your time there if they issue you the visa.

I"m afraid you'll draw a blank. And you'll have to go to bkk and visit those issuing the visa on behalf of the relevant european embassy. Relevant one being the country you first go into, or the one you'll spend most time in.

It'll cost you lots of money and lots of time, and hopefully you'll remember you're a human being during the whole process. It's dispiriting to say the least, and the best advice i got while complaining about the process was to just jump through all the loops they put in front of you. It's shocking how the simple process of getting a visa for a thai person to go on holiday has been made so shockingly anti-human.

Birds just fly in and out of countries, no checkpoints, no passports, no immigration...

I found it very easy to get my wife a Spanish visa on 3 occasions. The main reason for refusal is not having enough money or no reason to return, just follow the right instructions which can be found on many websites and you shouldn't have any problems. Back to the OP, I found the French embassy in CM very helpful with all my questions, even though I was going to Spain they helped me alot for my first visa process. They also said that if I were to land in Paris rather than Madrid then make my way to Madrid by which ever means I wanted that I could get the visa from the French embassy and not have to bother going to Bangkok, but I had already preliminary booked the flight so it was not an option.

I don't understand why the visa process is so difficult for some and so easy for others? Everything is so inconsistent here. I know a girl who is a Nurse at Suan Dok Hospital and she has been to at least 6 European countries at different times, the USA, and to Australia on vacation. I asked her if she ever had a problem getting a visa. Her response - "never".

When I lived in Europe I often met Thais who were vacationing in Europe and they never seemed to have problems. Yet on thaivisa there are literally thousands of pages of stories of Thais being rejected for visas to travel abroad.

Thais can get visa's easy enough if they have met the requirements. Money is involved in one way or another. Take your nurse traveling to 6 different countries Australia and the USA. Trust me she in no way represents the average Thai. If they saved up all their life they might be able to afford one country.

Perhaps owning their residence and money in the bank will help. I doubt that the average Thai would meet up to the requirements in North America. Even if they do you hear stories of being turned back by immigration once they arrive there visa in hand.

The more your wife travels the easier it is! I remember the British embassy in BKK years ago, telling us to go and get a few Asian stamps in our passport before we applied for our UK visa. Like Thaimillar, I have heard good reports about the French consulate in CM. Your Schengen visa must be from the country in which you intend to enter the Schengen area. Although the Hon. German Consul in Chiang Mai can't issue visas to my knowledge, Herr Hagen Dircksen is a very amenable and erudite man and would I'm sure give you accurate advice were you to contact him, as would Mijneer Peter Van Loo, the Hon Dutch consul. Good luck- it's a minefield!!

French Embassy in London will issue free of charge for wives, I got 3 there for my wife when we were living there

All Schengen countries should not charge for wives and husbands as long as the marriage is properly registered and not just a temple ceremony. I only ever have to pay for my step daughters visa, which is only half price as she is under 16.

David, was your wife in the UK on a visitors visa at the time you applied?

Student visa iirc! Thinking about it, we never travelled as a married couple!

We live in CM and applied for a Schengen through the french embassy ( TLS contact in BKK ) and were told to expect a 7 to 10 day process. Based on this, my wife expected to pick up her passport in BKK on her way to Europe. Suprise suprise, the passport was processed in 2 days. As we did not request the passport sent back to CM via EMS she will not have it until the last minute.. The question is, how do we know the visa as been approved. The envelope is sealed from the embassy and TLS is not allowed to open it. How are we supposed to know if ti's been approved. Short of doing a trip just to pick it up, it going to be last minute.

Has anyone reading this been refused the visa and how did you learn about the refusal.

The Spanish embassy always state that if you have not heard from them 7 days after you hand in you application then its passed and come to pick you passport up after the 8th day. If there is something that needs attention they will call you, same if its been refused.

As we have not received any request for additional info, I can only surmise that it's been approved but It would be nice if they could tell us. There is no contact for the French embassy to get info and I think that's how they want it. I don't think they would tell us over the phone anyway.
