When living in the UK I bought and used this satelitte receiver box;

Humax IRCI-5400 (for Irdeto Embedded)

This satelitte box with dish and programmed cards allowed me to pick up over

780 channels from all over the UK, Europe and other places, even two thai

channels.

I was thinking of bringing the box over here, but have no idea if it would work

or not. I know I will not be able to pick up the same channels as before, but

would it work if it was connected and sattelite lined up etc.

I was wondering if anyone has done anything similar, and could advise me as

what to do. There is a satelitte shop here in Samui, so maybe I could ask them

to install the dish etc if I go a head with it.

One last question, my friend will bring this with him when he comes on holiday

will there be problems with customs?

Thanks

It should work for the digital free to air channels (which includes at least one of the same two Thai Channels). You'll either need more than one dish, or a fairly large steerable dish to get a reasonable number of channels though. Your local satellite dealer in Thailand can probably help (as you'll need to get a dish anyway)

I'm sure if you do a search on the site, you'll find other references to UBC alternatives...

Alternatively, there's always lyngsat - http://www.lyngsat.com/tracker/asia.html - It's a bit cryptic at times, but tells you what channels are available on what satellite, and what type of LNB you need (i.e. C band, Ku band). - and remember, unless you want to subscribe, don't expect to pick up any channels marked as encrypted.

One downside though - it probably won't work out any cheaper than just getting the free-to-air receiver that they'll try to sell you along with the dish...

The Humax IRCI-5400 is still a very versitile receiver and with the right cards would pickup many encrypted channels.

But you would need need a big dish.
