NONTHABURI: -- Somchai "Ae Leuk" Iampaijit, a drug suspect wanted for the death of a woman from whom he stole a motorcycle during a police chase, was killed yesterday in a gunfight with police in Nonthaburi's Bang Bua Thong district.

Somchai, 33, was seen on CCTV footage on Friday apparently running into the street, stopping a Chatuchak Weekend Market vendor who was passing by, shooting her dead and taking off on her motorbike while evading arrest for drug charges.

Somchai was shot dead during a predawn raid on a house in the Rattanathibet 13 Estate.

At 9am, Nonthaburi Police chief Maj General Thanayuth Wuthijamrasthamrong led officers to the scene where Somchai's body was lying on a lower roof with bullet holes in the left ankle, chin, left torso and right thigh.

Near him was a 9mm pistol - while Bt900 cash and crystal meth were found in a pocket. Somchai's firearm would undergo tests to determine if it was the murder weapon.

Police also seized Nachanok Rodnampa, 21, along with 30 yaba tablets, at another house on the soi.

Nachanok said two days ago a close friend brought Somchai over to stay at his home without telling him who the man was. He said police surrounded his house and told Somchai to surrender but Somchai climbed out a window and jumped onto his neighbour's roof while shooting at the officers. They returned the fire and killed him.

Nachanok said the drugs belonged to his close friend.

Pol Lt-General Winai Thongsong, commissioner of Metropolitan Police, said the 80-strong team didn't overreact and had no choice but to stop Somchai as he fled and opened fire on them.

Police would continue to hunt for accomplices as the house where Somchai laid low was found to have drugs hidden inside, he said.

This is true but when your dealing with Drugies anything goes, they dont care about anyone but themself....Job well done by the cops.

Just because he was dealing drugs does not mean he used them himself or that he was "hi" during the police chase, although he might have been, we don't know.

So don't inject you self rightous sanctimonious assumptions into this story until you have all the facts.

And clearly if he did that, and had just blown away an innocent woman to take her bike,

then he fits in the raving mad dog category. If a mad dog is running loose in the village

they shoot it. But wouldn't consider shooting the average calm soi dog, even if it stole their sausage.

If he hadn't shot first, and they had just executed him,

then certainly there would and should be comments against it.

Yet, it is entirely possible to support eradication of yabba and meth in Thailand,

and NOT support random extra judicial executions of dealers,

or ' suspected dealers' or simply those who were accused for other reasons,

just to run up quota numbers.

But any fool drawing down on cops and firing should expect to be done quickly, with prejudice.

That is the beauty of rhetorical questions, no substantiation required. Not to attempt any justification of pre-judicial police actions, but are pre-judicial execution victims all innocent? What would anybody have to gain by executing innocents? "Let's go out an execute thousands of innocents at random [or did they select innocents?]" That makes a lot of sense. If by innocent you mean they had not yet had their day in court you would be correct but the tone of your comment implies that they had done no wrong, two completely different issues. People that buy into progaganda so easily must remember to put a tooth under their pillow because surely the tooth fairy will visit.

I'm not saying this guy shouldn't have been killed, as he had clearly killed a woman and was firing at police.

But that doesn't mean that the killing of innocent people during Thaksin's war on drugs is even close to acceptable.

Although the drug used to treat hyperactivity in children may be in the same drug family, I don't think Dr.'s are prescribing crystal Meth for kids.

Well assuming the facts of this story ate correct I wonder why 80 police are needed to arrest one guy.

I wonder that given the rather lax sentencing (not for drugs but general crime certainly) and then reduced for good behavior and the Kings pardon, what sort of message is being sent to criminals as to the benefits of crime against the disbenefits.

If he shot at the woman to get her bike then I don't see how anyone can shed even a single tear of remorse.

I wonder whether the crime of dealing in drugs is one that is pumped up beyond what it should be and whether society (led by governments) doesn't have an equal responsibility in educating people not to take drugs just as much as the personal responsibility of an individual not to sell them. Maybe society would be better served by relaxing the criminalization of drugs and spending more on education and prevention and sentencing of other crimes.

Maybe people should accept the responsibility of responsible parenting and children be taught their own self responsibility instead of governments and other organization telling each of us how to live the model clone like life they shove down everyone's throats.

As for all the innocents killed under Thaksins Administration, I am sure many weren't innocent and equally many were probably a thorn in the side of some influential person who were killed for nothing more than that.

Not much is black and white except the unwarranted death of the poor woman. Condolences to her family and I wonder what support society will offer her family now poorer for the loss of her income not to mention the grief at her passing.

Time to build some more prisons so the punishment for crime meets the severity of the misdeed. I vote for abolishing the blanket Kings pardon and making it available to a far more selected group not all and sundry that happen to fall into some relatively random categorization just to reduce prison overcrowding.
