They spin this crime crackdown rubbish every single year ...year in year out. Never stops. Nothing ever changes or ever will in Thailand. Everyone knows that the cops richly profit from gambling and prostitution in Thailand which is why neither will likely be legalised...........ever.

Ever heard of a place called Pattaya. Why do you think the pollies put the new airport just a stones throw from one of the biggest and cheapest brothels in the world. Not to mention buying ,swapping and exporting isan wives

You mean suvarnabhumi airport ?

I don't really think they stuck Suvarnabhumi airport there as it was convenient to Pattaya! How many Isan women do you see being "exported" at the airport? "swap"? .. how do you swap an Isan girl?

Walk past any Suvarnabumi airport gate with a flight back to europe and there will be isan girls everywhere holding hands with their farang sponsor (husband).. everyday of the year ! farangs make up only a tiny percentage of prostitution in LOS but the vast majority of poor isan girls are married to farangs not other races.(some japs and agrarian sth koreans) These young girls are taken out to provincial airports ie Ubon and KK by fathers or guardians and shown what an old farang looks like. ..."thats where the money is" go forth and enrich our family young girl ! the woman i lived with was told this by -pa-pa- when she was 12 years old in the mid eighties.. Nothing changes here.

Shut down Pattaya and you will almost destroy the financial fabric of isan.Hundreds of millions of baht pour into isan provinces every year but not from the government. It comes from old man farang.

Wife swapping?.....dont you know any euro men? they swap or share wives all the time in Thailand and overseas . You quite often see them in live porn on the net in orgies.

Is it only me, but how in hell is Chalerm still part of this country's political scene. Not only his own personal history but that of his close family and cronies over the years would bar him from uttering any kind of political statement in any or most, if not all other non corrupt countries! (Is that an oxymoron?)

You have a person making 'x' Baht/annum and he's suddenly offered 'xxxx' amount/month for following one political persuasion to persuade him .....'What's he going to do?' He needs the money to raise/feed his family. Pennies for some but an absolute fortune for others!

Corruption/bribery at it's best!

I agree. It simply beggars belief that he is involved in the government, given his background. Or maybe he is there because of his background ???? The only upside for me is my enjoyment of his daily moronic proclamations. Clearly he has no understanding of the word hypocrisy.....

Step up vice suppression ? Since the police are heavily involved in the vice, asking them to suppress it makes about as much sense as appointing a fox to guard the hen house.

I of course don't disagree about your point about the economy of Issan. I am just questioning the percentage of passengers going through BKK who are Pattaya bar girls. I do not agree that the new airport is located there because of its proximity to Pattaya!

Except I think you'll find the "final user" is the prostitute herself. In Thailand anyway.

Reportedly, one of Chalerm's first acts as a minister was to hand his good mate Thaksin a cable TV licence, refused by the previous govt., back in the days when the great businesman was losing the family money hand over fist (except fot that very dodgy police computer contract).

As a crony from way back, he gets a party list guaranteed position without the need to face an opponent likely to point out his moral standing, credibility, family history or financial dealings that suffer scrutiny in most countries. The party list system is designed for cronyism, and achieving MP status for the unelectable.

Deal with sex tourists? There are an estimated 2 millions prostitutes in Thailand, 95 percent of them catering to thai people. So sextourism is not an issue, statistically. It's like saying eradicate eating spaghetti among tourists visiting Italy!!!!...Furthermore what's wrong with sex tourism?Without it tourism arrival would plunge - I estimate- around 80 percent.

why dont they just make gambling legal? Like any normal country?

They should first deal with the sex tourists. That's insane

Maybe 20 years or more ago it would have been 80%, but sex tourism for farang is a somewhat marginal thing now. Tourism might drop 10% at most. Arrivals from other parts of Asia might be more of a factor. In any case, this is all very hypothetical - gambling and drugs are what they are talking about here - it is primarily those with a Western mindset that make a big fuss about sexually orientated entertainment.

I'm not so sure there. Wikipedia, for example, has tourism producing around 6% of GDP - with sex tourism at around 3%.

A little more info on your point. And of course figures lie and liars figure, so no way of knowing how accurate the numbers are. This is Thailand after all.

Tourism (6%) of GDP per wiki

Tourism revenues are on the rise and contributing to about 6% of GDP.

Thailand enjoys high foreign investment and consumer confidence. Unemployment is at 1.2% as year 2010, with estimations of falling to 1% by the year 2012 therefore Thailand has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the world. Decades of economic growth reduced poverty in Thailand. Thailand enjoys one of the lowest poverty rates in Asia. In 2010, Thailand, along with Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Brunei and Malaysia were the only countries in Asia with less than 2% of the country's total population living under $1.25 per day.

It is believed that at least 10% of tourist dollars are spent on the sex trade.

Prostitution catering to foreigners is believed to be around 20% of the total prostitution scene in Thailand

http://en.wikipedia....omy_of_Thailand http://en.wikipedia....ism_in_Thailand

hm, 10% of 6% sounds like .6% of GDP

I guess we should not feel too bad for Thailand according to these numbers. The western world would love to only have 1.2% unemployment. And it appears that Tourism is a small part of GDP and sex tourism is even more insignificant. So it must not be the HUGE problem it is made out to be, especially with farangs only 20% or 1/5 of it meaning 80% 4/5 is home grown local sex trade. Sounds like the farang contribution is over rated. Not sure what the foreign retirement % of GDP is?

info on retirement

Pattaya http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pattaya

The city (Mueang) had 104,318 registered inhabitants in 2007. As with the Bangkok Metropolitan Region, that figure excludes the large number of people who work in the city but remain registered in their hometowns, and many long-term expatriate visitors. Including non-registered residents, the population numbers around 300,000 at any given time. Other estimates put the figure as high as 500,000

There is a fast-growing community of foreign retirees living in Pattaya. Thai immigration has a special visa category for foreigners over age 50 who wish to retire in Thailand. Pattaya is attractive to many retirees from Europe and other Western countries not only because of its climate and exotic, easy lifestyle, but also because living costs are a fraction of those in Europe, a major consideration for people on fixed pensions or incomes.

Chang Mai http://en.wikipedia....ng_Mai_Province

There are approximately 5,000 expatriates living in Chiang Mai making it one of the most popular destinations for retirement in Thailand. This is probably due to the cool climate, natural surroundings and lower cost of living.

Hua Hin http://en.wikipedia....ua_Hin_District

There are about 3000 retirees living in Hua Hin making it one of the more popular destinations for retirement in Thailand. This is probably due to the climate, natural surroundings and inexpensive cost of living. There are also many hotels where retirees may live.

Ko Samui http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ko_Samui

There are many retirees living in Koh Samui, making it a popular destination for retirement in Thailand. This is probably due to the climate, natural surroundings, and ease of living on the island.

Phuket http://en.wikipedia....Phuket_Province

In July 2005, Phuket was voted one of the World’s Top 5 retirement destinations by the acclaimed Fortune Magazine. There are thousands of expatriates living in Phuket, many of them retirees.

The unemployment figures in Thailand always intrigue me. In Western societies it is probably the number of people who are signed on to receive unemployment benefits.

If that were the case in Thailand, then it would be the number of people who have losty their job, signed up for the 500B per month compensation that lasts 3 - 6 months.

When you travel through the North East you see plenty of people who don't have a "job" per se. They either man the family farm or make themselves available for seasonal work on other farms.

A more interesting and revealing statistic would be the number of people who pay income tax.

I fully agree that prostitutes cater for the local market first. But you can't deny the prevalence of sex venues for farangs in Bangkok.

And by the way, if you say that 5% of the prostitutes cater for farang (i.e. 100,000 prostitutes based on your calculation), I hardly see how it can concern 80% of the tourists coming to Thailand.

Do some math, 100,000 people, working only 70% of the days of the year, is 255 days.

255 days * 100,000 = 25,500,000 customers they accomidate........................don't need a nonsense government stat to tell me that there aren't 25 million tourists to Thailand a year

3 farang nightlife areas in Bkk, a city of 15+ million people hardly amounts to a prevalence of sex venues.

The first time I came to Bkk, I walked along Sukhumvit and didn't even notice Nana Plaza, so it's hardly "in your face". The last time I went to Patpong, it's hard to see the bars for the stalls selling tourist rubbish and Cowboy has never been OTT.

Not really a big deal.
