Thai Residency / Id Card For Foreign Born Son

Featured Replies

Hi All, I know this may have been discussed before but despite searches on this forum and on google I can't find the exact answer I'm looking for (mainly because the majority of queries deal with passport requirements rather than citizenship information for a foreign born child).

Anyway, I'm trying to get a Thai ID card / Permanent Residency for my Irish born son (his mother is of course Thai), we are hoping to apply for this here in Thailand as we are are now living here as a family. He doesn't need a Thai passport as he has his Irish Passport for travel. I have been told that if my Thai wife and I present ourselves to the relevant department, with our own documents and of course an embassy stamped and certified translation of our sons Irish birth certificate, then our son is entitled to Thai citizenship.

My questions are, do any of you have any experience with this and if so can you pass on the procedure for this type of application or at least the office from where I need to make the application?

Thank you very much in advance, Paddy.

Your son is not entitled to, he already has Thai citizenship. The fact that his mother is Thai makes it so.

Your son was born In Ireland. That means you must report his birth to the Thai embassy or general consulate for Ireland and ask for a Thai birth certificate. With the Thai birth certificate, the Thai government is aware of the fact that a Thai citizen is born and will have a record of your son. Look at the embassy webiste how to apply, they are the only authorithy to issue the Thai birth certificate.

At the same time you can apply for a Thai passport for your son. That will mean you son enter and leaves Thailand on the Thai passport, so he is no longer required to have a visa.

if you are currently in thailand, check if you can apply for the Thai birth certificate by mail from the embassy OR apply for it with the help from the Thai Foreign Ministry, Consular Department. (They will sent the application for you to the embassy, and the embassy will than issue the birth certificate).

Only the Thai embassy for the coutnry were your son was born can issue the required Thai birth certificate.

...He does need a Thai passport for travel to/from Thailand. Otherwise, as you find, he is subject to Thai immigration rules and effectively, a foreigner in his own country
