Ladies and Gentlemen,

On the occasion of visible haze today and the first PM-10 record this year exceeding EU safety standards, it is my honour to annouce the opening of the annual dusty season. It's the time of the year where the faithful turn to praying to the weather gods for rain and the more pragmatic minded get their airfilters and masks ready and stay indoors. Excellent time to take a holiday from Chiang Mai, too, after the lovely winter season has come to an end. May the fires of the farmers be short-lived and soon doused. Amen.

Cheers, CMX

Only because December 28, which had a higher reading, is technically last year. (Even though it's of course the very same season, during which you expect to go through clear days and hazier days.)

Also it seems you also misunderstand the EU standard, which specifies a number of days the number of 50 can be exceeded; it's not presented as a hard limit. (If it was, most of the EU fails just as badly.)

Note by the way that some other parts of Thailand score WAY worse.

No doubt though we'll clock up enough days before April; no argument there. wink.png

Could somebody ('chiangmaiexpat'?) please tell me where I can find the current measured pollution levels? The Pollution Control Department hasn't yet published any readings for this month.

/ Priceless

PS The monthly value for January was 25% below the 2002-2012 average biggrin.png

Seems to be a couple of days behind as it shows Jan 31, 2012 these figures. Sara Buri shows in red at 128!

As the dust has meanwhile become displeasingly noticeable (enough to defeat most rose-tinted Chiang Mai climate apologetics), I thought I should mention that the old PCD website has been replaced by a new offering at:

http://aqmthai.com/

It uses Ajax and all the latest web technology to provide real time data on air pollution. Unfortunately, in Thai only. Chiang Mai (city hall) readings are found under item 35t in the drop-down list on the Reports page.

Cheers, CMX

I guess this subject keeps people with little else to think about busy.

Apologies, Hoke wai.gif

Yet every time the subject comes up, you feel compelled to read it and post.

I guess you have little else to think about and need to keep busy?

I'm just a bit confused about the term "Dusty".

It isn't dust, it is smoke.

See Tywais' satellite image of the fires burning right now, and you will agree.

Combination of the two. Dry dusty roads + traffic = dusty air. Add in all the building sites with no watering down of the dust....

And then there's all the pollution belching vehicles. So there's 3 major sources of pollution. We need rain pdq

Thanks for that, I know all about dust.

I live across from one of the largest bldg projects in CM- Punna Residence @ CMU.

Idiots banging on tin with mallets at 8 AM, jackhammers run by people not trained in their use (you don't tape off the actuator and run continuously for minutes at a time) and absolutely no dust abatement, other than that provided by nature. Good luck with that.

I wet mopped my apt this morning- I guarantee in 2 days it will be like walking on a beach the dust and grit is so bad.

But no, aside from this and the vehicle pollution....it really is the fires. Look at Tywais' satellite map closely.

There is a 3M retail shop on Wulai road south of the Chiang Mai gate.

They sell a variety of masks in the 300 to 1000 k baht range.

I bought one and they definitely work but its fairly claustrophobic and sweaty experience.

That's astonishing !

The fires seem to be confined, in the main, to Cambodia, Laos & Thailand.

Don't any of the authorities care at all ?

Not so cheerful today after looking at that.

Don't forget Burma as it has usually been a strong contributing factor for the farther north (Chiang Rai, etc) areas.
