TUFP: Fire damage to shrimp trade not serious

The Nation

30175701-01_big.jpg

SAMUTSAKORN: -- Thai Union Frozen Products yesterday clarified that damage from a fire in its manufacturing plant in Samutsakorn on Saturday has affected only part of its shrimp production.

According to a company release yesterday, the fire has not hit other manufacturing lines thanks to its wellmanaged security system. However, the loss is being assessed and all is covered by insurance.

Thiraphong Chansiri, president of the company, said no one was killed in the fire, although some 66 workers were reported slightly injured and received hospital treatment. Many had now returned home.

"We are most worried about our staff and have provided assistance to them as they are still our most important [asset]," said Thiraphong. He said the company has guaranteed no ammonia gas leaked out during the fire in the factory.

The company has moved its 2,100 workers from its shrimp manufacturing plant to other processing lines, such as tuna, sardine, mackerel, salmon and squid which are safe.

Thiraphong said the company has already contacted its customers overseas to tell them of the fire and that it will not affect shipments. This was because shrimp exporting is now in low season during the first quarter of every year, when the plant produces only 60 per cent of its capacity. In addition, the shrimp production line is planning to be moved to another plant in Songkhla to ensure production continues.

Chatuporn denies moves afoot to oust Thida as UFDD head

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Pheu Thai party-list MP Chatuporn Prompan yesterday denied reports that Thida Tawornset would be removed as the caretaker leader of the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UFDD), which spearheads the red shirt movement.

Chatuporn said the UFDD, which will meet on Wednesday to pick its executive members, would elect Thida as its leader with full authority.

He denied reports that some red shirts were not happy with Thida's role as UFDD leader, saying they would vote Thida in as leader so that she can carry out her role with full authority.

Chatuporn refused to speculate on his chances of being elected leader, saying he would play a leading role in the UFDD regardless of the outcome.

He was responding to reports that he might try to win the UFDD leadership due to the possibility that he could be stripped of his MP seat if the Constitution Court rules that his failure to vote in the general election should cost him his status.

Meanwhile, Chinnawat Habunpad, adviser to the transport minister, said he was opposed to Thida's leadership due to her arrogance and her refusal to accept the majority's voice. He said that unless Thida adjusted her leadership style and distanced herself from the activities of her husband, Pheu Thai party-list MP Weng Tochirakarn, she should not be voted in.

Chinnawat said that for the sake of unity, the UFDD should not rush to elect the new leader, but should wait until after the red shirt gathering at Khao Yai on February 25.

He pointed out that leading members such as Kwanchai Praipana had split from the group, in Kwanchai's case because he was not satisfied with the management of the UFDD. The group should ensure that it gets the right leader who can bring together all factions and groups, Chinnawat said.

PM Urged to Clarify the Truth behind Hotel Meeting

BANGKOK: -- The Democrats are demanding that Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra explain her recent visit to the Four Seasons Hotel.

Opposition Democrat Party Leader Abhisit Vejjajiva called on Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to clarify a rumor that was first leaked by businessman Akeyuth Anchanbutr, who stated that the premier suspiciously met with an unidentified supporter of ex-fugitive leader Thaksin Shinawatra at the Four Seasons Hotel last Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Abhisit insisted that the premier explain the truth herself and must not let others speak on her behalf. He stated that many people have came out to explain the purpose of her visit at the hotel that afternoon, but that their messages were inconsistent.

Meanwhile, the Democrat Party voiced concern that there was a hidden business agenda behind the meeting. Abhisit pointed out that the premier went to the hotel during office hours and did not attend a meeting at the House.

In the meantime, Democrat Party Deputy spokesperson Mallika Boonmeetrakoon said Pheu Thai MPs are obviously making excuses for the premier.

In response, the Pheu Thai Party blasted the Opposition for trying to defame the government. The Democrats are urging the premier to explain why she was absent from the meeting and went to the hotel instead.

Mallika stated that the premier should clarify the matter as soon as possible, saying that the issue threatens to ruin her reputation.
