Ghanaian arrested with 1.5 kg of 'ice' at airport

BANGKOK, Feb 13 – A Ghanaian man on Monday was detained for smuggling 1.55 kg of crystal methamphetamine, also known as 'ice,' at Thailand’s main international airport, according to customs officers.

Yeboah Kwame, a 36 year-old Ghanaian, was captured Monday morning on arrival at Suvarnabhumi Airport with 1.55 kg of ice in his stomach and intestines, Rakop Srisupa-at, Director of Customs Department’s Investigation and Suppression Bureau, told a news briefing.

The detainee flew Ethiopian Airlines from the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, to Bangkok. On arrival, he behaved suspiciously and tried to evade customs officials.

The customs officers asked to conduct a body check and an X-ray scan inspection when objects, later identified as 70 packages of crystal meth, were detected in his stomach and digestive track.

The suspect said he swallowed the packages before heading to Thailand, intending to deliver them to an Ethiopian drug dealer at a hotel in downtown Bangkok’s Sukhumvit area.

Initially, the suspected drug smuggler was transferred to the Narcotics Suppression Bureau police for further investigation. (MCOT online news)

So, what about the intended drug dealer? Just catch a mule and let the world know about it before setting up the dealer in Bangkok? Seems like someone is about to break their own arm trying to pat themself on the back. Perhaps this story is a bit delayed and they indeed did try to snare the dealer but may have failed and published the successful airport arrest. Probably never know for sure.

It sounds like he is already spilling his guts by the way and I'm sure he will tell them the Hotel etc.

It will be interesting to see what Thailand's judicial response to this is on the back of Malaysia's sentencing of the Thai girl.

Always seems to be the way, although after a strip search and x-ray, it would have been out of the bag. Majority of these mules are met or observed at the airport; part of the protection of investment. If the mule doesn't show, head for the hills!

Still, getting the story into the media as soon as possible appears to be the normal approach.

Edit: Seems to be a strange drug type, crystal meths, to be smuggling into Thailand given the amount produced in surrounding countries.

This is a key point. It's astonishing how Thais don't get the idea of using the mule to get the bigger fish. Then using the bigger fish, the Ethopian at a Sukhumvit hotel to get yet a bigger fish probably a Thai. Then use that Thai to get a Mr. Big. It becomes clear after reading years of these mule busts and seeing the celebratory police bust photos and watching crime reenactments by petty criminals on TV, that Thais have no clue about investigative , serious, detective work. They have no "strategy". They appear to be inept at seeing a bigger picture that would really make a difference. Unless they just don't want to get to Mr. Big and it would impact everyone's skim up the food chain. So how in the world will they ever make all these "crackdowns" work and be effective? The answer is that they won't.

The suspect said he swallowed the packages before heading to Thailand, intending to deliver them to an Ethiopian drug dealer at a hotel in downtown Bangkok’s Sukhumvit area.

He is a Scapegoat Thai Customs and Police need that to look good he never knew who was the Ethiopian drug dealer who he should meet guess they told him he should wait for a Call once he arrived.... Old story it was a Set Up from probably a Dealer who works with you know who

WHY should anyone import Meth to Thailand from Africa if it is made in Laos and Myanmar on a Industrial Scale???

Another canidate for a "long term" stay in the Bkk Hilton or better yet a test subject for the death sentence. I know he is only the mule and yea they need to get the dealer too but you have to start somewhere and punishment should be very harsh.

I can't believe that all of these airports around the world still just hit the single mule here or there KNOWING that when they do there are many more mules passing through. They always get tips, that's how they find the single mule. That keeps them busy while many more mules walk right through.

It's almost shameful really that they allow this to continue.

...and you believe the story of a desperate man who just got caught with drugs in Thailand is saying?

I'm not saying it's not true, but the stories are always pretty consistent.

Kind of like how every guy in jail is innocent.

The guy made a bad choice. Whatever the Thai Government decides, it's ok with me.

Well guess his story is partly true but he was doomed from the beginning for the Big Dealers 1,5kg is nothing.

It was his choice eh. !!!

It was just a set up.

They manufacture Meth on a Industrial Scale in Burma =Tons of that stuff , why should anyone bother to bring it from Africa???

They bust was designed to make someone look good ....

My conclusion is that there could be a African Dealer who delivers from time to time some desposable people to bust. .....

This guy must have trained his stomach for a long time to swallow that much. Ethiopians, Nigerians, Europeans, Russians, Thais, Japanese, etc....I'm wondering how many tons of any drugs get in on one day without customs 'checking' anything. jap.gif
