Thanks for that, many helpful replies around the ridiculous and unhelpful insulting one.

Few good tips exactly in the flavor of the question.

I'm thinking I may first up try the walk down to and cross Asoke to pick up a taxi, if they can stop there somewhere.

Alternatively, many taxis turn out of Asoke into Petchburi, and I've grabbed one there often just around the corner from the station after waking down from Fortune IT Mall.

I think this is the method you are saying is not good, although I won't need to go to Petchburi Station as such.

After exiting the Airport Express I don't want to go to either the BTS or MRT.

The trip with the Airportlink and the Skytrain to Nana or Asoke station, is about an hour,

when you have to wait for the Airportlink train easy 1 hour 15 min, Taxi about 35 - 50 minutes, depending the traffic.

worth to do it without big bags and alone or maybe also as a couple.

3 or 4 People are already cheaper in taking a Taxi. Have a nice trip.

If you're really that interested in saving a couple of dollars be my guest, but it hardly seems worth the hassle when you can jump in a taxi at the airport and be in your hotel room in 30 minutes for around $10.

30 minutes would be at what 4.00am?.....

Except during rush hour, you can easily go from airport to Marriott on Suk. Soi 2 in 20 to 30 minutes. I've done it many, many times from airport to my apartment on Soi 10.

If you can afford to stay at J.W. Marriott on Soi 2, why would you take the extra time and trouble just to save maybe 2 or 3 US dollars? I much prefer airport to hotel direct in one taxi.

Thanks for your input "HerbalEd"

With due respect, did you read my post correctly where the Marriot was mentioned?

I stated that the Marriot was the destination to give a landmark for reference, I didn't at any stage say I was staying there. Near there is a good drop-off point for many hotels.

I do appreciate any help, but please don't jump in 'with a hint of <deleted>' without knowing the facts, particularly to assess my situation.

Geezuz, is this forum becoming so politically motivated that one needs to read and re-read their post, looking at all angles and possibilities before committing to print!

Let me for everyone's sake just state the following:

I'm a constant traveller to the 'land' O.S. in question and have been since the mid 70's.

At times I have lived within the 'land' for extended periods.

I am old, yes, but not too bloody old to enjoy this 'land'

As part of me going to this 'land' I find it interesting to look at varying ways to get around within this 'land'

To me and my recent timetable of visits to the 'land' the Airport Express is pretty new stuff.

When you get on a bit, it's good to keep one's mind active with ideas, so they say!

I could go-on but I would hate this to sound like a rant.

Just look at the Topic Title

AIRPORT EXPRESS / TAXI COMBO TO SUKHUMVIT

Guys, to a couple and only a couple of you here, please relax, if you are much younger or just younger than the author,

you may end up with less wrinkles, less grey hair and a better Blood Pressure Reading at your next doctor's visit.

Many Medical Herbalists would agree with this!

fishhooks, what is so odd is that you happily pay tens of thousands of baht to come here (regularly you say) and you admit to be old, injured and infirm.

Given all that, it's just bizarre that you would want to scratch around on the BTS and taxi, with luggage, worrying about crossing over Asoke when for just a couple of dollars more you can do it in a taxi.

It simply makes no sense.

This hopefully will be my last post on this ridiculous carry-on.

" scratch around on the BTS " ........... BTS NO! Look above, I haven't at any stage indicated any desire to mount the BTS.

Airport Express, yes! ........... I believe it is quite easy and convenient to use this from this airport.

If we had something like this in my home town it would be an overnight success.

" worrying about crossing over Asoke" ........... No worries from me, from the outset this was one of the suggested replies to my question, as to what I would need to do.

"when for just a couple of dollars more you can do it in a taxi" ............ 'harry' answers you adequately above along this theme.

What's transpired here from you in the main, is someone actually ignoring the thrust of the original question and going off with your own prejudices and unfortunate 'below the belt' comments.

You've actually appeared here to give no practical help or advice whatsoever, only baggage. I wonder if you have done this in the past on other threads?

Let's face it all round, there's nothing I can think of for this unfortunate topic I have raised to go on.

Contained above, I'm sure some of the positive answers by respected members may infact help others who want to get as far as possible from the airport in this manner........................................

When i travel in and out of Bangkok on business, it's a business expense. When I travel for personal reasons, it's a personal expense.

Both times I think the two or three extra dollars cost for the convenience of throwing my suitcase in a taxi and letting someone else drive me is far preferable to using the Airport Express and then . . . ummmm . . getting a taxi from there.

See if this works for you: http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Thanon+Kamphaeng+Phet+7&daddr=Soi+Nana+Nuea%2FSukhumvit+3&hl=en&sll=13.747577,100.559771&sspn=0.011818,0.021136&geocode=FWbP0QAdsnn-BQ%3BFXiw0QAdAFH-BQ&mra=dme&mrsp=0&sz=16&t=m&z=16

You just need to walk out from Makkasan and then cross the railway (not cross Asoke - 6-8 lanes of traffic), and get a taxi going north on Asoke to turn left into Kamphaeng Phet 7 down to Suk Soi 3.

Thanks again, all good stuff and I'll report back.

This whole question is more or less just an experiment on getting around in different ways and I'm reasonably sure 'some' may give it a try if convenient.

Avoiding the BTS where mostly there's a definite 'stairway to the stars' issue and not being in a taxi where the 'end stop' of their speedo on motorways is the limit can only be an advantage.

Haven't used this combo method Airport to City yet, but Markassan to Airport after a short taxi ride from Sukhumvit worked fine.

Picked up a cab in Sukhumvit Rd just around the corner from Soi 3 and using the Airport Express was at the airport about 30-40 minutes later.

Posted

Yep, works well the opposite direction as well. Short walk to get a cab as kindly advised earlier.

Just the Airport Express fare and about 50 Baht taxi to Sukhumvit.

Did you cross Asoke to catch a taxi, or just cross the railway and catch a taxi down along to Suk soi 3?

Yes, crossed the railway, actually Phet 7 was a bit quiet on the taxi front so walked a little further to Phetchaburi and had a taxi in a couple of minutes, very shortly afterward to Sukhumvit.

Good way of doing it if travelling reasonably light as I was and a lot faster than a taxi all the way.

Of course, if 2 or more people involved, taxi direct from the airport would be more cost effective.

Agreed,I mean I even get a taxi 9 out of 10 times from the airport to Phetchabun, cost 4,000 baht.

What!

You could rent a car for that.

For tourists, its the best way to see the country.

Unless you are her for work only with no interest in the Thai living, the public transport is best.

Public transport in Bangkok, partly good.

But not much to see from Underground and I do not see much more with the Airportlink, than I see with the Taxi.wink.png

Skytrain ok, but to many stairs! Boat, I never tried, never went in parts of Bangkok where they are used.

But all other Public transport in TH, NO THANK YOU. Old and/or dangerous in my opinion.

It's the taxi's on the motorways that really scare me.

I know they are in a hurry to get their next fare, but they seem to have absolutely no fear of winding the speedo to the end stop.

The 80k speed limit is completely ignored by almost everyone, but at least some of the private vehicles may be 'slightly' better maintained.

Anyway, I'm a young mid 60's and want to retire from this planet with some time to say bye to loved ones, not just a few seconds whilst spinning out of control in a clapped out taxi on a Thai motorway.

Perhaps Bendix may come back here and give me another serve, although most of his time recently has been spent 're-educating' the Brits about what they should and should-not do regards their pension scheme.

Yes, some Taxi drivers drive to fast from or to Airport in Bangkok, but I usualy say than, if I feel unsecure, that he can get a TIP a good one, if he drives like I order him to drive.

If he not follows my advise to slow down, I film his Speedometer with my mobile, a photo will do it also and tell him that I will knock his head off at the airport and show the police my mobile evidence.

Until now everybody drove to my standard.cowboy.gif
