Online Underground Lottery Betting Rises in Popularity

BANGKOK: -- The 'Hor Kao' publication of juniors at the Faculty of Communications at the Thai Chamber of Commerce University ran an article about how university students are becoming addicted to online underground lottery betting.

A simple search for such sites via Google using the keyword 'website for online underground lottery betting' found a large number of sites. To gain access to such sites, it is necessary to apply to become a member. One of the sites advertised giving the highest payback in the country, with a standardized system, and with a 24-hour team of advisers available to give tips on which numbers are popular.

A web board is also available for members to exchange information. One particular website advertised for bookies and the launch of an online school to teach how to become an underground lottery bookie. Courses offered include the philosophy behind running a gambling den, how to bribe police, and how to deal with raids and arrests.

A website owner said the school aims to recruit students and working people as bookies.

An online underground lottery bookie said she's been in the business for over 5 years and would accept bets and pass them on to larger bookies. She notes profit is higher than the normal underground lottery and she feels safer from prosecution by the police. She adds that if a website is closed down, another can be launched right away. She earns around 200,000-300,000 baht a month and all her financial transactions are via bank transfers.

Another bookie who's a full-time student at a private university said he started off receiving bets from his mother's friends and his own friends. He would accept bets on unpopular numbers by himself but pass on popular numbers to the underground lottery websites. He says he earns hundreds of thousands every month and gets a greater discount from underground lottery websites than from normal underground lottery bookies.

A student who's a frequent client of online underground lottery betting says it is convenient as he can access the site via his phone or computer. He adds that returns are high and large discounts are offered than normal underground lottery. If he wins, money is transferred into his bank account the following morning without any transaction fee deducted. He also doesn't have to worry about being cheated and can go to the web board to get any questions answered.

The only reason these undergound versions can operate is that the official one is such a rip off and so it is easy to offer better odds than the Goverment does.

The gaming offered at Las Vegas offers odds with a slight advantage to the casino, so it is possible to win. But over the long term with hundreds of bets the casino always comes out in front. For example playing black/red at roulette gives you 18/20 odds and pays even money.

In the 2 digit illegal lottery, the odds of a win a 1/99 and depeneding on the vendor pays around 60-70/1. I don't know what the online offers, but I am assuming around the same. My g/f bets B20 each week for amusement - any attempt at serious gambling at those odds is idiotic.

Note that huge, life-changing payouts will over-ride common sense. I am sure that your chance of winning the Euro Millions is very similar to mine, and I don't have an entry.

As a Buddhist, I don't believe I've every heard anyone refer to the percepts of "sins". We really prefer to leave the mental self-flagellation to other religions. They are just the minimum requirement for living skillfully and aware.

Now, I'm trying to find gambling in the 5 precepts. To sum them up briefly:

I. Don't kill.

2. Don't steal.

3. Don't engage in sexual misconduct.

4. Don't lie.

5. Don't take intoxicants.

Nope, don't see it in that list. Now, again speaking as a Buddhist, anything that causes a person to grasp objects and ideas should be gently left go of -- it's a path to peace. Gambling causes one to grasp. There is a lot of attraction and aversion: Happy and elated to win money; sad and fearful at losing money. That's a viscous cycle. But a don't see "Don't Gamble" as one of the 5 precepts, although I'm pretty sure it is one of the 227 followed by Buddhist Monks. As layman, we can have a little more fun

One more thing -- I think to say that Christians and Taoists brought gambling to this part of the world is painting with a pretty broad brush. I'm pretty sure our ancestors were happily betting on various games (like cock fights and kwang wrestling) back in the days before Buddhism made it these shores. Be easy on our Christian and Taoist brothers and sisters. They're just trying to find happiness in this world the best they can...just like us!

...and just out of curiosity -- what are students betting with? Lunch money? I doubt seriously that this is limited to Hi-So kids.

I'm thinking that being a middle tier bookie could earn you a short flight off a tall high-rise condo if luck doesn't shake out on your side. Think I'll limit my betting to an occasional 100 baht ticket that I can buy right next to the Chedi at my neighborhood Wat. (puut len sparebox2)

I dont know if it has anything to do with the 5 teachings or not, however gambling in Thailand is against the law, underground lotteries are against the law, casinos are against the law. But the Thai Lottery is legal it it also not gambling. Edited February 19, 2012 by OZEMADE
