Have questions about train travel. Are there any SRT stations in Phuket? Want to talk with English speaking agent about travel options.

If I phone Thai Rail will I be able to reach an English speaker?

Want to take train Bangkok to Chiang Mai first class sleeper for 2.......around March 6. Govt site seems cumbersome. Can a local travel agent book it...for sure? And give me confirmation at booking?

Looking to visit museums and WWII POW camps out of Kanchanaburi on return from CM. Will I be able to do that on train? On my own? Should I look for a tour instead? Out of Kanchanaburi itself out maybe out of Bangkok?

Lots of questions I know but hopefully someone out there has some answers for me or can refer me. Thanks very much in advance for the help!

If you are already in Bangko go down to Hualampong station they have English speaking people down there who will help you. You can book a trip I think 60 days in advance. Better than going to a travel agent. giggle.giflicklips.gifcoffee1.gif

there is an ages old and well known solution to about all your Qs; GUIDEBOOK. It even has maps showing stations-for bus and also for trains-if there are in that town.

The SRT is just that: they sell tickets for trains and thats it. They are NO travel agents to do trips, tours, info about sites etc. SOME, by far not all, TH tr-agents (mainly those in tourist-swamped areas) can also book train tickets for you-provided YOU can tell them what train, what class etc.-at a hefty mark-up.

1st cl is for most completely unneeded and canNOT be booked online. Only a very few overnight trains have 1 1st cl car=separate sleepers in freezing conditions. IF a hi-rank Thai truns up-he gets priority about stinky farang.

TO me it looks like you cannot even find the cornershop on your own, so I would take a guided tour.

Also reading that guidebook would have told you, that very often long-distance buses are far quicker, much easier to buy ticket (just turn up and buy) and more frequent as trains and also cover many relations where trains do not even come near.

THis site is by far the worst for general tourist-info, even though it still turns up in some googles. try tripadvisor (seems much more suited to your ways of life) or lonelyplanet/thorntree (yes, of the guidebooks) or travelfish (for very young ignorant about anything backpackers)
