mcgriffith Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 OK, I got this idea the other day when I read Ian Forbes' thread about crashing in Kanchanaburi. Various riders posted with recommendations, and a retailer posted some photos of some cool bobsled underwear (just kidding). Howzabout members posting photos of their fav gear (kit to the Brits) that they like? Not just a snapshot- tell us why you like your particular item. It can be apparel, bike bling, whatever. Kit is kit. Extra points for crash scratches, and/or thrilling stories of near over the cliff experiences. I have a few I can post, but would rather members start off on this challenge. (Please retailers....this one is for the members only; not a sell opportunity, thank you for your understanding). Let the Gear Porn Challenge begin..........
villagefarang Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Judging from the response, there must be a lot of naked riders like Ian, wearing nothing but a banana leaf just barely large enough to cover their bits. 1

mcgriffith Posted February 20, 2012 Author Posted February 20, 2012 Ah, give 'em time, VF. It's a bit early, what with recovering from the weekend, etc. Maybe you could post a picture of your favorite Dainese leathers.
villagefarang Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Being little more than a poser, I just like looking good in basic black with maybe the occasional highlights. I happily wear mesh from over the boarder at Mae Sai, after watching a friend slide down the road at speed in similar stuff without a scratch. Okay his gear was trashed by he didn’t loose any skin. No extra points for me. I don’t do stoppies, wheelies, highsides or lowsides. I keep the shiny side up at all times. If I didn’t know better I would think you had been nosing around my blog and reading my trip reports. Here is a more recent shot where I stopped by to visit my wife's class of little monsters.
villagefarang Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Putting one of these behind you on your bike can add a little bling I suppose. This looks like a private party McG, so back to you.
mcgriffith Posted February 20, 2012 Author Posted February 20, 2012 That's some good looking gear, VF. You look badass all in black, with the ER-6n. I'll just add 1 item for now, my Oxtar boots. They have an especially nice feature- titanium toe sliders. When riding with folks who get a little....ermm shall we say competitive, and they get up alongside on a corner, as if they are going to pass on the inside (a big no-no on the road generally speaking)- you just drop your toe to the pavement. Sends up a nice shower of sparks, and makes a noise like fairing plastic sliding along pavement. Scares the living bejeesus out of those unfamiliar with this kit. 1
bobbin Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 My Shoei and Taichi mesh jacket. Proudly worn at least twice a year!! I know, I know....... Where's my pic? I attached it.
mcgriffith Posted February 20, 2012 Author Posted February 20, 2012 Try again, bobbin. It's a 2 step process- 1st attach the file, then hit the "Add to Post" underlined text to the right of the image, in the colored box area. A bit confusing, I admit.
KRS1 Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Sigma 501's For long trips 4-12 hours where i might possibly get my knee down, or when im riding with people that take too many stupid chances (gotta keep up ya know !). There pretty much water resistant in heavy rains, but not stepping into a deep puddle though, relatively light and can be worn with normal cloths without looking too much like a robot.Loosening the velcro strap lets me cool off my feet a bit when i slow down. Around town and short trips out of town 3-4 hours Harley Apollos, best dam_n boots i ever had. Light, flexible, zipper on the side for easy access and removal. The leather can be maintained easily by buffing out the scratches with a wet finger. Can wear them anywhere and look studly doing it. For gloves Alpinestars air flow gloves. Good cool airflow, lightweight carbon fiber knuckles, padding in lower palm, double stitched, can still retain finger sensitivity and feel natural not cumbersome. Unfortuantely i just sold my bike so sometimes i sit around with my gloves on like a freak.

mcgriffith Posted February 20, 2012 Author Posted February 20, 2012 Good stuff- Keep them coming! This is like reality TV- see what real people use to ride motorsai in LOS.....

In fact yours look like the very same boot that I have.

VF what are those you are wearing and how do they handle heat/ airflow ?? Pants and jacket are mesh and I wear a microfiber shirt as a base. After stopping for gas you get a nice cooling effect until the sweat dries up. I often swap out better CE armor from other jackets and on long trips wear additional padded shorts and shin-knee guards under my riding pants.I don’t ride in cities and spend most of my time moving on country roads so airflow is not usually a problem for me. Living 55km from town I am usually in 6th gear within a few hundred meters from my front door and then I just cruise. I ride for recreation only, so my gear may not suit someone who uses their bike for transportation in a city. I wasn’t sure what you meant by “those” so I gave a long general answer.
villagefarang Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 That's some good looking gear, VF. You look badass all in black, with the ER-6n. ER-6f or Ninja 650r depending. Its got the plastic bits up front.
billd766 Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 My mate in the UK sent me this photo. I am not sure if it is him though. I definitely like the boots.

Well that is the UK, this is here. Of course if you are riding one of these here in Thailand: you might need some Cinderella slippers to go along with the ensemble: I was looking for some more practical examples of riding gear TBH, but hey- whatever floats your boat.........

Unfortuantely i just sold my bike so sometimes i sit around with my gloves on like a freak. Don't worry KRS1. We've all been there. Just don't let the bike-less situation get to you. Also be sure to always wear some article of clothing other than the gloves, and try not to watch too much daytime TV. Especially "Highway Patrol" with Broderick Crawford.
monty1412 Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Mine is the Ricondi leather jacket.. great protection and good style it has side events at rear that make it very good airflow wise. On a recent drop in Phuket at 80km/h on a road surface which would have made Tom Waits face seem smooth the jacket took it all and I ended up only with bruised shoulder from impact and friction burn between leather and skin.... I also have recently purchased the Schuberth C3 helmet and while I don't think its as good looking as the Airoh jet I have it certainly has superior ventilation and incredibly low wind noise on high way.

Sorry was looking at the jacket and pants.. I thought initially it was a one piece high airflow suit.. cheers
