Officials step up measures to tackle wildfire crisis in the North

BANGKOK, 25 February 2012 (NNT) - The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry has stepped up measures to put an end to the wildfire crisis in Thailand's northern provinces.

Permanent Secretary for Natural Resources and Environment Chote Trachu said on Friday that the air quality in Thailand's North remains a disturbing issue due to continued wildfire and smoke and the amount of small particles that is above acceptable standards.

Mr. Chote conceded that the unresolved air pollution is posing serious health risks on the northern residents.

In order to more effectively solve the problem, the Ministry has sent 2 helicopters from the Office of Aviation for Natural Resource Conservation to help extinguish the fire in Lampang, Phayao and Lamphun.

According to Mr. Chote, it has been predicted that the wildfire will not be very serious this time because of the wet weather condition in the region. However, he assured that all related offices will continue to keep a close eye on the situation.

Mr. Wijarn Simachaya, Director-General of the Pollution Control Department, said that the latest air quality test found that small particles looked set to increase in many northern provinces and their amounts were in the level that might cause health hazards to the public.

PM believes any flooding will not be as severe as 2011

image_20120225140456B3539EF1-E0D3-890B-8F3881D4CD13F9ED.jpg

BANGKOK, Feb 25 -- Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Saturday said she believed that flood, if they were to happen this year, would not be severe like the flood crisis of the previous year, while the government would heed HM the King's advice to protect forests and prevent deforestation.

During her weekly TV programme, “Yingluck Government Meets the People” broadcast via National Broadcasting Services of Thailand and Radio Thailand, Ms Yingluck said that if there was a flood this year, the situation would not be critical like the flood crisis in 2011 as the government has prepared a response plan and better management.

She said many agencies have better experience and would not let such a crisis occur again. The government and the Strategic Committee for Water Resource Management would closely follow preparations and the ongoing situation.

Ms Yingluck on Friday led the Strategic Formulation Committee for Water Resources Management and the Strategic Committee for Reconstruction and Future Development to an audience with His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej to report on developments for water management, rehabilitation, and flood prevention plans to HM the King and listened to his advice and recommendations.

HM the King on Friday urged the government to plant a mix of fast and slow growing trees which could help mitigate the flood crisis while harsher punishment should be implemented for deforestation.

Ms Yingluck said the government has more confidence after listen to HM the King's advice on water management and would heed his recommendations.

The premier said more details were needed to integrate more than 100 projects related to water management and flood handling, and the government would closely follow up the projects.

One of the urgent issues was the naming of members to the National Water Resources and Flood Policy Committee, which was expected to completed soon. (MCOT online news)

Iranian embassy confirms 2 suspects in custody for Sukhumvit blasts are Iranian nationals

image_20120225152541B39D8C1D-C46F-F101-7186CD4DDD4DFFBB.jpg

BANGKOK, Feb 25 -- The Iranian embassy in Bangkok has confirmed that two suspects who were in police custody for alleged involvement in the Sukhumvit area bomb blasts in February 14 are Iranian nationals, according to Thai Foreign Ministry spokesperson Thani Thongphakdi.

Mr Thani, Director-General of the Department of Information, told reporters that the Iranian government has cooperated with Thai authorities in verifying the suspects's nationality as well as the authenticity of their passports and has confirmed that the two who were detained are Iranian nationals.

The embassy has also asserted that the two did not have any involvement with the Iranian government or any Iranian organisations. The embassy was coordinating with Thai authorities to meet the two suspects to provide assistance.

Thailand’s Criminal Court issued arrest warrants to five suspects on various charges related to Bangkok bomb incidents.

Two suspects were arrested earlier -- Saeid Moradi, 28, who lost both legs from his own explosive device -- and another suspect, Mohammad Hazaei, 42, who was taken into custody at Suvarnabhumi Airport while attempting to board a plane bound for Malaysia.

A third suspect identified as Masoud Sedaghatzadeh was arrested by Malaysian authorities in Kuala Lumpur.

Thai authorities are seeking his extradition to Thailand for prosecution.

A fourth suspect, identified as Rohani Leila, has returned to the Iranian capital of Tehran.

The fifth suspect is a Middle Eastern man who was captured by CCTV footage walking away from the rented house where the first bomb apparently exploded by accident.

As for the extradition attempt for the third suspect, Mr Thani said that the request and relevant documents have already been forwarded to Malaysian authority via the Thai embassy in Kuala Lumpur since February 23. (MCOT online news)
