BANGKOK: -- The government has upgraded its efforts to fight drug abuse and trafficking into a national priority, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said yesterday.

She urged members of society to cooperate with the government and police to prevent the spread of drug abuse.

Yingluck was speaking while chairing the opening ceremony of the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E) project at the National Stadium. Her son, Supasek Amornchart, accompanied her to the event, joined by about 15,000 students. The students have received training from Narcotics Suppression Bureau officials under the D.A.R.E programme to protect themselves from being lured into using drugs.

The D.A.R.E project was launched by the Narcotics Suppression Bureau to educate sixthgraders to keep away from drugs.

Yingluck's son took part in a parade inside the stadium and was assigned to carry the ceremonial flag to the podium.

In her speech, Yingluck thanked the officials who organised the event.

She said all Thais must cooperate to seriously fight against drug trafficking and abuse, adding that the government has made the problem a national priority that needs to be tackled urgently.

She said the laws against drug trafficking will have to be enforced strictly and drug abusers must be rehabilitated so they can return to society to live normal lives.

She said the government has a policy to prevent drug dealers from accessing those in highrisk groups.

She said the government would give priority to protecting students and youths from becoming drug abusers.

Narcotics Suppression commissioner Pol LtGeneral Chaiwat Chotima read to Yingluck a report listing the D.A.R.E project's achievements.

He said the project was modelled after a successful one developed in the United States and launched in several countries.

Chaiwat said 2,200 police officers have instructed some 730,000 sixth graders in how to protect themselves from drug pushers.

Chaiwat said all sixth graders nationwide would receive training under the D.A.R.E. project by 2015.

The kids and politicians should make a deal. The kids will stay off drugs if the politicians stay off corruption.

The kids probably see the grown ups actively sabotaging their futures and turn to drugs.

People turn to drugs when life is going no-where, and when their prime-minister can have secret meetings at a posh hotel when she should be in parliment trying to make life better for all of her countrymen.. and is alcohol not also a drug, and her politicians are drinking in Parliment buildings.... lots of alcohol.. so it seems..?

kids . . . stay off drugs, stay off alcohol, stay off sex !

idealistic thinking, any nation on this planet ?

Wow!

Now here is an anti- drug program that really will work!

"Stay of drugs, kids...or you will have to go to bed without desert!"

Start at the very top dear, prevention better than cure get the big wigs, who wouldn't be involved if it wasn't involving money, the greed factor again, stupid/good idea asking the kids not to take to the habit. Police clean up in every Jangwat, could eradicate 80% of drugs, that is the police clean-up not the population.

Lookee, a clown in police uniform, complete with obligatory double row of campaign ribbons and parachute wings. How unusual, not.

Kids, you'll never be PM if you take drugs, unless it's an overdose of nepotism.

I cannot understand why most of your posts think the sun shines out of the P.M.s rear door, if some of your posts were to object to the wrongs, you surely would be looked at with less criticism. UNLESS you just like winding up posters, I am not a fan of the P.M. but the message is not a bad one to youngsters, unless she is just after brownie points.

Nepotism is a family tradition, or did his classmates elect him?

What is wrong with that?

Sama same George Bush son became President, and in Thailand, people just take over the father place. Not unusual. See Bangkok Bangkok, CP, etc. Even some MPs and senators.

One, I am not averse to criticism.

Two, I respond to posts such as, Yingluck was only voted in by nepotism as opposed to the larger majority of the Thai vote.

Three, You really need to brush up on your irony detection skills (and your humour ones)

Four, at NO point did I, or do I, disagree with the message put out by PM Yingluck wrt drugs which is a fine one

Have a great day.

The fact that you accept the situation and don't see anything wrong says much about yourself and this country. Try also to distinguish between majority shareholders, elected officials, and those granted honours because of their family connections.

Nepotism ranges from the minimal where GW Bush had a slight advantage in gaining the Republican selection, to the total carte blanche of Saddam's sons. Chalerm's history puts Thailand closer to the latter than the former.

Maybe someone should give her a hint who the No.1 drug dealer in the country is.

I'm just glad to see they did not go that far to let the Deputy PM's brats lead the parade...

She's not much of a role model. Which kid is dumb enough to want to listen to her anyway?

Well she's rich, famous, like to glam up and wear expensive clothes, prefers to connect with people through facebook rather than face to face and to top it all off her family's connections have found her good jobs she wouldn't otherwise have got. Sounds like the perfect role model for young Thai girls.

Who is your role model then? Perhaps they should choose role models in the red light industry, a katoey from the bar?

What a load of c..p.

No, not from a bar.

But a katoey from the after news soaps should be Thailand's role models of modern thinkings.

Ironic that the pic is a characature of a member of the police, themselves one of the biggest distribution networks of drugs in Thailand.

LOL

No that's not a caricature of police! They do actually look like that, scary isn't it? thats why they call it the "Micky Mouse Police Farce"

Joking to one side for a minute, but for me it is a step in the right direction in that they are recognising a drug problem, and not trying to cover it with this "drug-free by 2015" BS.

If they are serious about it, get the drug education going, but get it right. Forget the fun; hard hitting and to the point.

If it is a political dress-up, then nothing has changed.
