Our new Pajero has been scratched by a vandal on the left front wing and front door. About 70cm long. Its not deep. Apart from a respray are there any other options available in Bangkok and vicinity.

If we did have a respray how long would they need the car? Whenever we have had a minor accident, the repair shop has always kept the car for a week. Would it be the same for a job like this (ie no body repair work)?

It really depends on how deep the scratch is to determine what course of action is required. If possible, pictures would help.

Some options other than repaint would be compounding, wet sanding. Could be done at a professional detailing shop.

If its too deep maybe someone that specializes in touch up paint for line scratches.

Is the primer or bare metal visible?

Sorry to hear that; there are many options for light scratches other than respraying but it's best to call your insurance company about what you could claim for and even if you have to pay yourself, they could recommend a suitable professional. It depends on the depth of the scratch, whether it's gone through the clearcoat, color, primer or through to the steel. On a 70cm scratch across two panels, only a professional should be trusted to assess the depth and least aggressive course of action. Light scratches in clearcoats can be sanded out and then polished; your insurance company is best placed to advise you, they usually have an 'in' with an authorised garage.

Thanks for the replies. I will take some photos tomorrow and upload. The scratch is light. Cannot see primer or metal. You cannot feel it with your finger

Something like scratch-x from meguiars should at least remove some of it if its not too deep. I had similar damage done to my car - the scratch-x got out some but I couldn't remove it all - needed to repaint the panels under insurance at a later date.

Regarding the insurance, take into account that if you claim this the premium will be higher next year. It may be worth it to just pay for it yourself.

If scratch has gone past a lacquer coat your stuffed, if you try and take it out you will end up with a visible patch. Looks like a paint job.

BUT, l have seen paint pens, l say paint but not sure if paint or what as they were 150bht and didn't seem to have a brush, didn't look closer cos l have no scratches but for a short term fix keep your eyes open at accessories outlets.

If you can't feel it with your finger it should rub out okay.

I agree, have had many small light scratches buffed out with a polishing compound.
