BANGKOK:-- The House committee on reconciliation has become embroiled in a disagreement involving the Democrats over the cause of the political disturbances in the past five years.

Committee chair and MP Sonthi Boonyaratglin has approved a draft report, which attributes the state as the trigger of political violence.

Democrats sitting on the committee have opposed this attribution on the grounds that such a conclusion could drive a deeper wedge in society.

"I fear that the committee report will fan the political divide instead of bringing about reconciliation," Democrat MP Nakorn Machim said Wednesday.

Nakorn called on Sonthi to heed the Democrats and revise the draft report before forwarding it for deliberation by the House.

He said the committee should look again at two key issues: the cause of political violence and the reconciliation measures as per the recommendations of the King Prajadhipok's Institute report.

Several reconciliation measures, such as the compensation package for victims of antiriot operations, the repeal of punishment by party dissolution and corruption cases initiated by the Asset Examination Committee, should be reviewed, he said.

Lecturer Thawee Suraritikul of Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University said the recommendation for AECinitiated cases to undergo the normal judicial process was meant to mend fences.

Thawee said the cases involved former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his accomplices, arguing the access to due process would be a gesture of reconciliation, which should not mixed up with the issue of amnesty.

In the past, the country granted leniency for coup makers and therefore those ousted from power should enjoy similar treatment, he said.

The redirection of AECinitiated cases had no linkage to the question whether to grant amnesty, he said, pointing out that the ongoing cases would merely revert from the fast track under AEC jurisdiction to the normal process handled by the National Anti Corruption Commission.

If the truth drive a deeper wedge in society, it should not be disclosed at all. Thailand is now a utopia. Let's not mess up the good time of the 60 millions (the general public) just to please a couple of hundreds (relatives of the death).
