to much fraud in thailand

:o

......rather pissed, that now you can't buy Skype credit online by credit card in Thailand any more. The only way to top up is to go to your bank and make a transfer over the counter.

Even more frustrating to see them advertise on Thaivisa.com yet are so Anti Thailand!

I tried buying various softwares over the internet (small priced, not more than US$40 for the most expensive one) and the reason for decline was due to my IP being in Thailand, or credit card issued in Thailand. :D

I can't even renew my own domain (from one of 'the biggest domain hosting companies on the www') while I'm living here because I was writing to them from a Thai IP. Screw 'em those bunch of burger-munching obese good-for-nothings! :o

at the beginning of the year I was showing a mate how skype works and its usefullness - but when he tried to pay for skype credits via a UK credit card and a singapore card they both were refused - I ended up using my Aust mastercard which always has worked for purchasing skype credit. - and we were accessing the internet on a vessel which had a sat connection and VPN to houston.

networksolutions is one of the biggest and it works fine if IP from Thailand.

If creditcard issued in Thailand and refused, I would have a chat with your bank, than the creditcard is not open for international purchase on Internet, not the fault of seller, it is fault of the strange Thai banks......

A Thai PayPal account works ok with Skype, and some of the domain registrars.

...not anymore George, my pal, also based here in Bangkok always paid via Pay Pal and he also has only the Bank Transfer option.

HH, I stand corrected. Bugger, they have changed it. :o

Thanks for your advice h90, I've shopped loads on the internet using my Thai credit card from outside of Thailand, even USA and Canada - no problems at all.

A couple of softwares companies, mainly from the US, are rejecting my card due to the reasons mentioned in my earlier post (in one instance I purchased that particular software before with no problem but they are not giving me the go-ahead on my second purchase).

It was deemed (by that company) that Thailand has a high rate of fraud so they stopped taking orders from Thai-issued cards, which is real b8lls :o

If you already bought before and they don't let you buy again, than they are real idiots.

I am also very very carefully with east asian customer, but I know some tricks to verify the facts and if the customer can pass it once I take the order (if it is not too big). if someone was already customer in the past, I of course trust him.

But I must tell there are really specialists arround. Had one customer from venezuela, he ordered small amounts, after 4 month he ordered bigger amounts, after 6 month VISA took all the money back because creditcard fraud and visa is absolut NOT helpfull.

After 4 month the customer was a frequent customer in my eye.....

Not the case with me as I just bought my first credits with a US Based Visa card over the Net here in Pattaya not 2 hours ago.

Paypal should work with Skype, as i hear E-Bay have bought the company, now when selling or buying on e-bay you can have a chat to your customer, thats if they have signed up through E-bay for the service.

Unfortunately not, Skype have contracted out to a 3rd party payment collection agency and they will only accept a bank transfer from Thailand, at least those of us with Thai issued credit cards. I’m not sure what would happen if you hide your IP by using a proxy????

It’s a real pisser when they don’t take into account existing customers but I guess that’s what happens when these American giant organizations like Ebay take over decent run companies!

Yep, I knew the minute ebay decided to buy Skype, it spelled the death of it. Ebay is an ugly, ugly outfit and is nothing more than a cold, calculating greedy corporation hiding behind this guise of a happy, fun and easy place to buy and sell. They ruined paypal and they will now ruin skype. There will be new rules and regulations introduced and they will happily share your skype in number with any law enforcement agency with letterhead as they currently do with ebay accounts.

HH, I was turned down for Skype and I used a US Visa card in the US. I will be returning to Thailand in a few days.

I don't know anything about making a skype payment over the counter at the bank. Can you advise how this works? I have a Bangkok Bank account.

Thanks,

Thanks,

OK, well after you hit the payment page you will be given the different options to pay, this case one option only, bank transfer. You will asked to provide a few details and then you will receive an email with payment info for your bank, including their account and reference details. Pretty straight forward but a right royal pain in the arse. I plan to top up on Monday so I will let you know how it goes from there.

The Anti-Thai company collecting the money is called Global Collect.

Yep... I was afraid this'd happen when N. Zennström decided to sell his business. As soon as the traditional multinationals get in, it spells inflexibility, impersonal service and trouble.

...but he got rich.

I remember him saying he would never sell out but I guess everyman has his price. Anyway good to him, a great idea.

It is not just Thailand.

I now live in the Middle east and have the same problem.

I am intrigued at how you do a bank transfer from Thailand.

Sure the cost is $25 for a payment of $15?

Hardly economic.

If there is cheaper way please let me know in this thread or via a PM.

They have an account at CITIBANK, Bangkok branch, so it should only be about 20 bats to do.

maybe a solution, but not sure: the gizmo project. Same program like skype (free software, gizmo-2-gizmo free, etc.), but i dunno about pay term for credit cards... one good thing though, their rates for accessing mobile phones is a lot cheapier then skype, but then again some rates are higher for land-lines.

Yes Ebay and Paypal are ugly organisations.

It was a sad day when Skype sold out to Ebay.

After reading this thread I purchased some extra Skype credit

for fear that in the future I might not be able to.

I have an English VISA card and live in Pattaya.

I have done it before and again it worked.

I do not know for how much longer this will be possible.

Paypal is a disaster.

I do not mind that they say no to accounts from the far east.

I mind that they play with you asking for faxes containing driver's licenses etc

and then again refuse you for no reason.

This is most odd :o

Because:

I've just successfully created a new Skype account and bought Skype credit with my UK credit card using my UK address whilst sitting here in sunny but slightly murky Pathum Thani.

No proxy, nothing but my KSC broadband and my UK email address.

I did note that you seem to go round and round the payment sellection / login / confirmation email system (at least twice) before you get to enter the payment details page, this could be a result of a slow connection though.

Weird.

It seems that you can set up your account and make the first payment of 10 Euros, and it gets accepted. The problem/denial happens when you try to make a 2nd payment.

Could be, we shall find out when my other half has finished using the credit calling sisters in Italy.

I did manage to top up my other Skype account using PayPal, but that was a couple of weeks ago.

EDIT: Just tried to add credit to my original Skype account using PayPal, seems to work just fine although I didn't actually complete the transaction. It certainly let me select PayPal from the options list. The plot thickens.

They have an account at CITIBANK, Bangkok branch, so it should only be about 20 bats to do.

Have just made such a payment via Bangkok Bank, branch in Chiang Mai.

Step one: Attempt to pay Skype online as usual. Follow the one and only possible procedure. You'll end up with a note with the necessary details on the recipient account (Citibank, Bangkok). Print that note.

Step two: Go to your bank and hand over that note and say you want to make a transfer to Citibank. That's it. The process in the bank, will last 30-45 minutes and involve 3-4 bank persons participations. Not your problem, they'll know what to do.

The fee will be 160 baht.

Here's a couple of ways not to do it (applies to Bangkok Bank, Chiang Mai). Don't go to an ATM - Citibank isn't on the list of possible reciepient banks. Don't go to a small branch - they'll tell you to go to a bigger. Don't go to a bigger branch after 10.00 AM - they'll tell you to come back next morning before 10.00 AM.

I will let you know how I get on, by the way, I have sent a very strong email to Global Collect complaining about their new procedure..... :D
