I've been having a peculiar problem calling my g/f lately.

I'm on AIS, and so is the g/f. I live in Khon Kaen, and she is out in rural Udon Thani. I call her and it plays her ring music for about half the time it normally would before giving up. Then it cuts into a recording that says "Sorry, there is no acknowlegement from your requested number." That's the message you would get if calling a phone that is not answered. The difference though is that the message is coming after a short time (less than half the normal time you can let a phone ring,) and also that it does not leave her a "missed call" indicator. I've called her from two different phones and two different AIS SIM's, with the same result. She also says her sister has been having trouble calling her too. SMS's however do get through.

I guess it could be her handset (we'll switch that out and try tomorrow.) However, if it is her handset, I'm baffled at how that could be causing the network to abort allowing full-term ringing before coming up with the recording, and how this is failing to giver her missed call notices.

Any thoughts anyone? Anyone at all? Bueller?

I've had lots of connection and dropped call problems with AIS since switching from DTAC about a year ago. Problem is DTAC still doesn't provide 3G in Pattaya and my priority is data so I'm stuck with AIS. I've resigned to carry a second phone (a cheap old Nokia) with a DTAC sim to handle phone calls. Btw, the DTAC sim that's in a folder with a picture of a girl with sunglasses has an awesome promotion with 30 satang/min calls in DTAC network, 1 B/m for other networks. That's cheaper than AIS in-network.

I am pretty sure that SIM and associated default plan is 30 satang for the first 30 seconds, then 1 baht/min thereafter, all networks, 7x24, so still a decent deal. (SMSes on this plan are a bit extortionate at 3 baht per.)Note that everything is rounded up to the next highest minute, so a 1:31 call on this plan would cost 2.461 baht with VAT. I reviewed my CDRs and guesstimated my average overage at ~ 57%!

Regarding the OPs situation it is impossible to troubleshoot at a distance without a lot more detail. Either her phone is not currently registered with the network, for any number of reasons, or the serving base-station is, at the moment of the call, at capacity. In 8+ years using One-2-Call (AIS) I can't recall issues completing calls or having calls dropped, other than that period of time few years ago when the interconnect gateways were underprovisioned. On-net call completion should be in the high 90's%.

SMSes are store/forward so not particularly relevant.

Where is the sister? What network is she on? Is this a new problem? How do you know the SMSes are getting through? Can she try a different SIM just to eliminate the phone as a potential problem? Can the GF receive calls from other people? On other networks? Can the GF make calls to other people, on other networks? Are other people in the GF's vicinity having similar problems?

That's possible, I'm just passing on the information given to me by the DTAC helpdesk - and they didn't mention anything about 30 seconds :P But like you said, still a decent deal and certainly better than the 1.5 B I pay per minute at AIS, all networks. What's a CDR anyway?

Maybe that's the case where you are but I can assure you I have daily trouble getting through with AIS here in Pattaya, and those time where I do get through the line quality is abysmal with echos, sounding like you're talking through a spring if not like Mickey Mouse - sorry I don't know the technical terms, just that it's useless to have a conversation. I don't carry two phones for fun, I'd much prefer just having one phone with me. :)

yeah....only "new" customers can get the lower rate plans. previously gf had 1 bt/min all networks 24 hours. after i switch plan, then the only option to "turn off" the monthly fee was the 1.50 baht/min 24 hours "plan"

but, they do have mao mao. if you make a fair amount of calls, you can prepay for a bucket of mins. but they expire in xx days. 0.75 baht/ min all networks include vat. my gf usually does the 200 min for 20 days 150bt. *500*200#. i think *121*2# to check remaining balance/min. call will automatically end when it is used up. so you know to re-apply if needed. Looks like truemove h and i'm guessing dtac have something similar?

Followup: It does appear to have been her handset that was the cause of the problem. Hasn't seemed to happen since switching her out yesterday. She had at least three people (and I think more) mention trouble calling her prior to the swap. I don't know what networks they were all using? Still baffled at how a handset could be the source of the problem as described.

Did you verify the problem with the 'old' handset? If so, and the old handset exhibits the same problems then issued solved. If you haven't verified the problem with the'old' handset then the problem may return. Although a new handset can solve all sorts of "issues". ;)
