I recently moved in to a house with a pool but I have never had a pool before. When we moved in, the landlord showed me a switch (in a shed with lots of pipes) which switches on the jacuzzi and water fountains (both flow into the main pool). Yesterday the jacuzzi and water fountain stopped working. I tried switching it off (thought it might need a rest as I have been running it almost constantly as I like the noise of running water) but today I tried switching it on but still not working (just a little trickle from the water fountains). Any ideas what the problem could be?

the pump does not run?...Does it hum when you turn it on? If so...

Jammed due to being clogged ?

Jammed due to a bearing freezing or?

could also be starter capacitor gone open ( cylindrical thing with two wires coming out..mounted on the pump under a cover usually) check if has any sign of bubbling on outside or heat damage. Cheap as chips to buy and easy to reinstall..two screws....take it with you to any shop that sells pumps

..If no hum ..any electrical burning smell? If so ...well ....better buy a new one..or many pump shops can fix cheaply.

If no hum ..some pumps have a thermal switch which opens when pump over heats...usually resets after a period without power though..could also be faulty.

If no hum ...check the breaker and/or Safety Cut...turn off and on as they sometimes sit half cocked when fired and can look like they are on....

good luck

thanks for the advice - will ask the wife to translate your suggestions to the pool cleaner next time he's here - he should know which bit is the pump!

is the pool filter still working?

Since I note you said you have trickle of water it could be a simple matter of the water level being too low in the pool/Jacuzzi ( part of pool or separate?) for the strum box ( box on edge of pool with a leave basket and flap on it)..... if no water entering it no filter or fountain! Is it clogged.? Back flush the filter.... if it is a big ball shaped thing..there is usually labelled diverter valve(s) on the top. Your pool cleaning guy should know al that though...
