I've got a single entry non immigrant O visa. I've extended it for 60 days based on having family here, and the extension gives me until the end of May to stay. Can I get a re-entry permit to keep the visa 'active' if I go back to Australia for a couple of weeks at the end of this month?

If so, the re-entry permit is obtained before I leave Thailand at immigration or else at Suvarnabhumi correct?

Why would you want to do this? You can obtain a new tourist visa for the same price allowing a 60 day stay on return and 30 and 60 day extension where a re-entry will only allow stay until end of May.

You could also obtain a non immigrant O visa if you wish to stay longer or intend to extend stay but cost would be about twice as much.

Yes you can obtain and use a re-entry permit and you would obtain from immigration office that extended your stay or at airport on departure.

No sense in doing that as it will cost more than other alternatives, if you are leaving at the end of the month for a few weeks, when you come back, you will only have a few weeks at most, left on the 60 day extension, a re-entry permit only keeps the end date valid, it will not extend the end date. a visa exempt entry would give you a longer period of stay, at no cost.

As Lopburi3 posted there are better alternatives for you, and they depend on your long term plans on staying here.

Thanks, and the re-entry permit keeps the duration of the extension active as well, not just the visa validity, is that correct?

The re-enry permit only keeps the permisison to stay alive. Your visa is already used and of no use to you anyway. The re-entry permit and permisison to stay is what it is now all about.

When you return to Thailand, you fill in the number of your re-entry permit instaed of the number of your visa on the arrival card.

Can I also ask, does getting a re-entry permit and returning to Thailand on the extension of stay require me to have an onward ticket out of Thailand? Or is an onward ticket required just for a visa exempt entry?
