Where To Buy A Decent Rain Poncho

Featured Replies

now that the rainy season has truly arrived i want to get something to replace my 20 baht 7-11 binbag poncho

the criteria being

adequate size for my farang body

light and folds up quite small to fit under the seat of the bike

preferably has arms and a hood

is long in the body as they tend to ride up when sitting on the bike

is waterproof even in a severe downpour

comes in any colour but pink

Try the outter moat roadside shops with all the military and police uniforms the Northern stretch I believe it is......

They have lot's of choice.

Then go to Wororot market and buy a roll of strong and wide Velcro. Have the plastic buttons removed and the Velcro stitched on in long straps so it closes firmly and you don't look like Batman and keeps it from riding up and flapping all over the place.

There you go. Your perfect Poncho.

I have the 7/11 emergency bin liner also (but blue!!!), the arms are shorter than my T shirt arm and it just about gets down to my waist........and it said "one size fits all" ???

now mrs E (half my size) has a quality plastic one, comes in silver, press studs down each side....its literally 2.5m wide and maybe 1m long.

seriously it is big enough for 2 people on a bike together.....we tried it..........but she wasnt too happy......as driver I claimed the only "headhole"......she had to make do with the ...giggle.gif

you can get them along the moat from chang puak towards the big bbq on the corner. very robust and i think perfect attire for the next few days also.

The large size ones they sell at Big C are pretty OK. The middle of your calf down will still be exposed. They tend to last about one rainy season and that's it, tho.

Last year when I was back in the states, I grabbed one from my local Target. Much higher quality and I think it will end up lasting several rainy seasons.

Very near Chang Phuek gate on the road leading S to the Three King's Square, across and up from the new soccer field, is a great shop selling police, military, and camping stuff. Bought a heavy-duty red rain suit there last season; it is still awaiting this season's rain unlike the thin plastic rainwear available everywhere which may last one wearing.

Lots of other quality items from compasses, tiny electric lanterns with a bright low-to-intensive brightness, sunglasses, and the like

Go to a market and look for the guy that sells military clothing. You could find a U.S. Army poncho.

If you have survived the Songkran without a 'poncho', I'll think you'll be fine with your normal clothes. smile.png

Many people use an umbrella.
