khunken
It is obvious that the NBTC are sailing with the prevailing wind - i.e. moving away from the True-CP monopolists towards the AIS side, which will benefit DTAC as well. If I understand the article correctly (maybe) it is a small chink of light in the slow progress(?) towards 3G.
Unkomoncents
So where in the scheme of thing does consumer choice fit in? Nowhere. We're screwed. Just as with 3G. This is still about 3G, even as 4G is being installed world wide. They're so obsessed with trying to wring every penny out of the consumer in this country that, while fighting over the (largely ill-gotten) proceeds of one technology, they failed to notice when said technology became outmoded. That's a fair analogy for this country in general. Most days, it certainly feels like Thailand and Thais have been fighting so stubbornly over the pocket change that they never saw the world pass them by. retarius
Every few days I see such blatant racism and wonder why we are here, why we have helped build this country from its Third world status when all they do is insult us and abuse us. I used to feel that racism in the West was an issue. Then when I came here I realized that it is so small compared to the complete evil and fully embedded racism in this country. Do these people not have brains? Is evil and barbarianism their primal instinct? Do they think these are the dark ages (as they behave as such)? Does TV not take a stand against such blatant racism? Why do we have to suffer by reading every few days about the ever present and increasing racism of the people in this country? Surely there should be some morals left? It is depressing and pathetic. Dear Mr Angry...sounds about time you bailed out. The fact is that this is nothing to do with racism....most smaller countries have such rules and until recent deregulation in the UK/US they had strict rules about the ownership of media hardware and content. We have Rupert Murdoch's lobbying and money to thank for deregulation in UK/US. Racism is about taking negative action against specific groups...this is aimed at everyone non-Thai, and could be called xenophobic....but it certainly isn't racist. I've lived in Japan besides Thailand, US and UK....Japan is the most racist place I have ever been to....people are very polite to your face, but god they hate the white man who knows absolutley everything...the hatred may have something to do with the white man's arrogance, I don't know...but racism has a positive side....Japan's trains are notoriously crowded, but as a white man, one usually has a seat vacant on either side of him (they don't like the way we smell, so don't want to get too close). I always thought it pretty funny, the white man is the one used to doling out the racism...but when the shoe is on the other foot we call foul.... Finally, how have " we helped build this country"...what a load of rot, traipsed out by all foreigners who want some sort of special treatment....you're an immigrant mate...odds on you don't speak Thai, yet you think you poo doesn't stink. A chinese merchant family that has built one of the largest conglomerates in the world is petitioning to get so called "foreign" dominance out of one of its markets. I somehow don't think that "farangs" have a monopoly on making a buck selling stuff. It is just this illusion that perpetuates that somehow having a so called "thai company" running a business is in some way more in the national interest than having a foreign company. It is an illusion that they are doing this to protect Thailand from anything. And it is a very cunning strategy to put it in terms as though a supposedly "Thai" company is working more in the interests of the Thai people than a foreign one, because no one is allowed to discuss the issue. Until it is understood that the THAI PEOPLE/CONSUMERS are the national interest, this charade will continue. All of these companies are in this market to make a buck, and to believe that in some way a Thai one represents the national interest more than another is a piffling nonsense. What is important is that companies are prevented from enabling monopoly or oligopoly profit from the Thai consumer by hiding behind unnecessary government restriction. This goes for so many markets in the country where the unnecessary middle man makes the killing and the little guy gets screwed, which is of course in the national interest because the middle man is Thai(often of Chinese descent)? The system has made billions for people by proclaiming the farang the devil working against the national interest, whilst in most major Thai markets, a gilded few take the people to the cleaners. This is about securing and strengthening True's market position, nothing more, nothing less, whilst delivering very very little to the THAI PEOPLE.
Ricardo
Is there not a certain irony, in a country currently being governed from Dubai by an alleged Nicaraguan/Ugandan/Montenegrin citizen, trying to maintain rules against dominance from overseas ? sparebox2
many businesses should remains Thai. Especially the bar business in Pattaya & Phuket. Is there any particular reason they should ? Yes. Thai should be the the business of selling Thai meat. In Pattaya & Phuket, Farang are selling Thai meat to Farang in their bars. Pimp is not a legal profession for Farang, besides, they do not have work permit to operate as a Pimp. I totally agree with that! It is unacdeptable that foreigners are involved in illegal activities! Only Thai people should be allowed to get involved in illegal activities! Correct. Farang is Pattaya/Phuket as guest. They should not be here as a Pimp by profession. If Farang want to be Pimp, they can go to Amsterdam.

alant
"But some parties say the regulations should be revoked, as they might contradict Thailand's commitments to global trade organisations." Thailand's commitment to global trade organisations is one that needs to be adopted by all those struggling with their economies in the West. Adopt a policy of massive import duty on overseas goods, under no circumstances allow overseas personnel or organisations to be in control of businesses based in the country and utilise handy environmental rules and regulations to deter even further importation. With the changes coming for the US politically, maybe the US can help pull world economy forward again. I know that's getting off topic but I stuck it in there anyway. Exactly, and some other sectors too. It's hard to think of any country that has made the leap to developed status that hasn't had some measure of protection for its own industries. In Thailand's case the record of success in attracting inward investment has been remarkably good, so by definition the current legislative regime can't be too offputting to foreigners. This doesn't need there isn't a need for some improvements at the margin, perhaps simplification of the Alien Business Law. Correct that I cannot speak Thai that well but being partly deaf and tone deaf learning Thai is not easy. Incorrect, I am actually a NON-Immigrant as I am so often told and as is shown in my visa and visa extensions. Incorrect again, my sh1t does stink quite often. i don't remember asking for ANY special treatment from Thailand in the 19 years I have been coming on holiday, working and living here.
