Tusnami Alerts and Warnings are Not Called Off per the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

A Tsumani was detected to have been generated and Warnings or Alerts are Still in effect until 2 hours after the expected arrival times. That would be after 20:30pm in Phuket.

Do not be fooled by Low Ocean Buoy readings. Tsunami's often multiply to huge heights when reaching shore.

BASED ON THESE DATA THE THREAT CONTINUES FOR ALL COASTAL AREAS OF

THE INDIAN OCEAN. FOR THOSE AREAS - WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES HAVE

OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS AFTER THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME

OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN

LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO

BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE

TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE

Not universally true. Over 100 people evacuated the Exchange Tower after it swayed enough to alarm them. Strangely, no other nearby buildings seemed to have people out front. Perhaps the 42 story building experienced some kind of resonant frequency...

There is continuous updated coverage, for the next hours, minute by minute at : http://edition.cnn.c...-earthquake.cnn - at which you need to keep clicking the ASIA earthquake page after each update. It seems fair, accurate and not spectacular but direct reporting.

They are collating expert advice, and the potential outcome initially appears much better than 2004, but please get away from forewarned areas as a precaution.

This earthquake is about 50% of 2004 and of a different type. The limits of 2004 should see you safe in all eventualities.

8.8 would seem to be more than aftershock and could potential beca vertical quake. Definitely keep eyes on this one.
