I remember some 10+ years back being down south on a bus heading towards Surat train station from one of the provinces and lo and behold some japesters decided to throw water at the bus. It cracked the front window of the bus as the ran off. The bus stopped ... all the other passengers hopped into pick ups and on motorbikes until muggings was left standing with no clue what was happening and no way to get to the train station and therefore my flight.

My beginner-ish Thai got me to 'the bus ain't gonna nowhere, mate, sort yourself out'! and after hanging around comtemplating my next move I managed to speak to someone living nearby and got a lift to the station.

I have hated Songkran since passifier.gif

i was out for a dinner last night at a restaurant a fair bit away from Chiang Mai, it was just one of those perfect nights with friends in Thailand, anyway I made my way back into the city on my motorcycle without incident, got to Thapae Gate, ( centre of Chiang Mai ), then took a blast of water in the face from idiot farangs .

A blast of water in the face is fair game during Songkran but I seriously objected to it at 12.45am, I wasn't expecting it at that time of night and to be honest with you I lost the plot, jumped off the bike and gave the farangs a serious mouthful of slightly uncouth language ( well very uncouth to be fair ).

There were about 6 of these guys and they looked like tourists, so to be fair they may not know any better, but I put them straight about assaulting motorcyclists with water at that time of night.

I have been thinking maybe I over-reacted so I now throw it open to my esteemed Thaivisa colleagues to express their view of the situation. violin.gif

I would of done the same. however, in my authoritative Captain Peacock manner....coffee1.gif

All joking aside, i hate this time of year, prior to the songkran madness i stock up my fridge

and stay boarded up my aparment for the 3 days...! As this songkran madness only lasts

3 days here in bangkok...thank goodness, in patters it seems to go on forever with the loonie

tourist farang...shock1.gif

My neighbors have been blasting music over loudspeakers outside their house from 9am until 11pm since yesterday. It is so loud, that Even if I put on my over-ear headphones on to watch t.v. I can still feel the bass shaking everything in my house.

Last night I went out to buy some grocery snacks from 7/11 at midnight, and people were still riding around in trucks trying to soak me with ice water.

I went out yesterday midday and had some Songkran fun, but now I'm starting to get a little pissed off...

Am I just being miserable, or do some people just take it too far???

You do see a lot of people getting exhausted with it, a couple of hours a day is probably more than enough. cowboy.gif

It's a sort of unwritten law here in Phitsanulok (as it used to be in CM, but not sure about now) that water throwing stopped at dusk, which for me moving up from Pattaya and the mayhem, I thought it was brilliant. Works great, enjoy the water during the day and enjoy the evening/night/next morning socialising.

If that was me in the same situation, two days before Songkran officially starts, I think at a minimum "a serious mouthful of slightly uncouth language" would indeed be in order.

Would also have to say that these guys would have to be tourists, probably up there just for Songkran, the sooner that it is explained to them that they shouldn't be throwing water at motorbikes, in the dark during a normal day the better.

Such an ambassador Mr. Blether.....................

I felt a little bit sorry for them...........they go on holiday to CM and get bletherated. shock1.gif

Can you imagine the look on their faces when theblether started firing out Glasgwegian expletives at them, shocking ph34r.png

They probably didn’t understand a word you said.wacko.png

There was a particular four letter word which was used liberally, it has a certain international appeal.

Unfortunately Thaepae Gate is a Ladyboy hot-spot and when they heard me shouting the F word a few times a queue formed, with them saying "Okay I can do ".

Unintended consequences annoyed.gif

Ah, you see, every cloud as a silver lining!giggle.gif

had a lovely songkran.

went wakeboarding with my daughter friday, we had a lay in saturday, and a group of us cooked a big lunch and watched the F1 this afternoon.

tucked the kid in about 2 hours ago without so much as an untoward splash. lunatics on soi 11 gave us a wide berth.

that said, i saw one very drunk farang guy get run over running around in the soi, and watched another get the crap kicked out of him by what appeared to be bodyguards. in my opinion he deserved it. you dont charge a group of people wearing suits who just stepped out of benzes at 10 pm.

Nothing is worse than idiot farangs during songkran. Cringeworthy to say the least.

and the water thing here, towards older, higher status people, *IS* often a sign of respect...

In much the same way as when I was in the six form, sports day meant we could give the teachers a good kicking on the football field.

edit//used a bad word/not that bad/but

We used to play field hockey at my school. You can do a lot of damage with a hockey stick smile.png

Usually at immigration the Farangs have to deposit their brain and they pick it up again when leaving Thailand.

So you can hardly blame them.

I thought it was your wallet that got deposited.....giggle.gif

Mr Wilberforce Claybourne Humphries catchphrase was 'I'm free'.

As for mrs Slocombes wet pussy lets not go there. I wonder if that too had a blue rinse?

Ok i see what you all mean and i do understand but i believe all in all millions of Thai people as well as foreigners had a great time and enjoyed the songkran festival.

Anywhere in the world a big event like this would have had its share of problems and accidents.Maybe over here a few too many accidents but from what i have seen things regarding safety are getting better each year.Comparing this to the useless violence in my home country each weekend i do not see things in Thailand are any worse.

I am not the biggest fan of Songkran, but if someone wants to give me a soaking then fair enough, I really don`t mind. However I would be more than a little upset if it was 12:45 at night. That is really taking the p1ss.

However, the vast majority of the locals round my way have the sense they were born with and refrain from splashing those who clearly do not want to get involved.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say your overreacted.

1) Its just water.

2) If you ride a motorcycle, you need to be extra careful. You should thank the considerate people for making you more aware that you need to vigilant at all times.

3) Those ladyboys are gonna be velly velly leery about sweet talking you because you have a short fuse.

4) go get a massage and chill out.
