Greetings to the forum...

Does anyone know if 2 1/2 hours is sufficient time to get from the airport in Udon Thani, to Aranyaprathet, and over the border to Poipet?

There's an AirAsia flight arriving from BKK in Udon Thani at 1715 (on a Wednesday) and we want to make sure we are across the border before 2000 hrs (8 p.m.). We plan to stay a night or two in Poipet - check out the casinos, whatever. (I know about Poipet's rather dubious reputation). We will not be venturing on from there the night of our arrival, so no concerns on this part.

As the distance from the airport in Udon Thani to the border crossing is only 56km, I would think we should have sufficient time, but I don't know if the border crossing delay may pose a concern, especially since we probably won't reach there until possibly 6:30 or 7 p.m.. This will be at the end of May.

We really don't want to get stuck at the border in Aranyaprathet and have to spend a night there.

Thanks!

I think you may want to recheck your destination....

Poipet is straight east of Bangkok and about 10 hour drive to Udon...

From Udon Thani closest border crossing is into Laos, not Cambodia

If you want to go to Poipet, no need to fly...Much faster to drive or take a van from Bangkok

Yeah he got me all confused, but I think his flight from udon lands in bkk then he roads it to poipet.

I have done bkk to aranyapathet more than 100 times, no matter how fast I drive, I never made it less than 2 1/2 hours, cos you hit some traffic lights towards chachansao, and some single carriage roads.

There are mini buses from Victory monument to Aran or Rong kuer market, and most go at neck breaking speed.set aside at least 3 hours, they will have take more CNG on the way.

thanks guys. i obviously got my lines crossed somewhere! :) i'm meeting a friend in BKK (subanna...) and we were planning on travelling from the airport to Aranyprathet, and across the border. There are just two of us, so it sounds like the mini bus from Victory Monument is gonna be the best bet.

my friend's flight arrives in BKK at just after 1 p.m. I will meet her at the airport. so this would be our starting point.

now that i've provided accurate info, i hope you can confirm that we will have sufficient time to get across the border that same day.

thanks,

You can take a taxi from the airport. Regular taxi that is, and bargain. If you do that he would just take the motorway towards chonbui and exit heading to chachansao. There is a military checkpoint about 15 I'm from Aran. Every commercial vehicle stops for inspection there. I have never been stopped in a private vehicle.

Or you two ride the airport shuttle to the last stop in town and walk to victory monument.

thanks mega ranter.

last two questions for the day :)

do you happen to know the approximate cost for the taxi ride from the airport in bkk to the border in aranyaprathet?

my friend's flight is arriving from chiang mai, and she has just her carry on luggage, so we s/b on our way from the airport by 2 p.m. worst case scenario. barring something unforeseen, this should put us at the border before 6 p.m. - more than sufficient time to get across before 8 p.m., right?

thanks again.

when i google on the taxi fare from bkk airport to aranyaprathet, it looks as though it may be less than 500 baht in a meter taxi. is this accurate? i would have expected something at least double this amount (if something sounds too good to be true, it usually is) am i catching a break on this leg of my journey?

update: 2500 baht - 3000 baht would appear to be the going rate.

A driver who is prepared to break speed limits - and pay the occasional 200 baht fine - but not a maniac (me) would do central Bangkok to Aranyapratet in about 3.5 to 4 hours. Add 30 minutes if leaving Bangkok in the rush hour. Allow 5 hours for contingencies plus pee/coffee stops.

I would guess that the same applies to minvans, but have no actual experience.

A taxi can do it in three hours, especially from the airport. I did it 2.5 hrs several times as I always leave bkk in the wee hours.

My ex gf with her cng powered Chevrolet, manage three hrs occasionally.

Not exactly the same topic, but how is the road via Aranyapratet to Siem Reap now? Is it finally done? Last time I checked there were still about 20km that was a problem without a 4X4. Can one make it in a normal car now? Always wanted to do that drive, not sure why, just one of those things.

And, no, I don't want to take a minibus, I would like to self-drive, more fun. Thanks!
