Four gunned down in unrest in southern Thailand

Published on Dec 25 , 2005

YALA - Four people have been gunned down in separate attacks by suspected Islamic militants in southern Thailand, police said Sunday.

Three Buddhists were killed in two attacks Sunday in Yala, one of three Muslim-majority provinces bordering Malaysia where more than 1,000 people have died in an Islamic insurgency and other violence since January 2004.

Term Srisuwan, 53, and Nikhom Sae-ngao, 45 were driving in Raman district Sunday when they were shot and killed by unidentified gunmen.

Earlier in the day two militants gunned down Buddhist Paibool Upala, 32, and a 30 year-old Muslim woman Rahaya Yawo, as they were riding a motorcycle in Bannag Sata district.

Paibool was killed instantly and Rahaya was critically wounded, police said.

In a separate attack on Saturday night Muslim village chief Ahrong Tayae, 46, was killed in Narathiwat province's Muang district while guarding a local school.

"Up to five militants came to school and called the victim's name. He came out of a prayer room and they sprayed him with an assault rifle," said Colonel Nukul Kraithong, superintendent of Muang district.

Nukul also said the militants stole the victim's handgun.

"It's clear that the gunmen want to incite unrest since there are many killings today," said Lieutenant Colonel Sukhon Suchanthabut, chief investigator for the Rama police.

The killings come just days after a bomb planted under a car in Narathiwat wounded six people./Agence France-Presse
