Why Is It So Difficult To Find A Good Friend In Thailand

Maybe that body language stems from an underlying feeling that you may be from some law enforcement agency and someone may be getting close.

Or simply shame about their lifestyle even if no one's after them.

I have been reading Andrew Drummond and it is easy to see why especially the ex cops and pseudo cops. I just stay away. Better to be alone.

Are you saying that cops, excops are ashamed of thier lifestyle? Maybe I am just misreading what you are saying.

I get the feeling that if you want to be part of the Thai tourist police then it is benificial to have a criminal record of some sort, the nastier the better. You wouldn't find to many excops involved in the tourist police. If there are some involved it would be best to stay well clear of them, a few apples gone rotten.

Anyone who seeks out any involvement with police here is IMO either warped or thick, best case simply ignorant. Lots of opportunities growing up in NYC to make friends with "connected" guys, but same thing. . .

I've got an ex-brother-in-law who seems OK, but I'm still happy I live 1000k away.

Plenty of people use their "status " as a tourist police volunteer as an excuse to take liberties in thailand

and think that being a " police vol " themselves will get them off traffic fines and other such violations

As far as im concerned ,i will stay out of their way and they will stay out of mine

I would not allow myself to be hassled ,detained ,questioned ,arrested by a farang in a wannabe police uniform in thailand

the Mickey Rourke quote in Barfly applies:

"i dont hate cops, i just feel better when they are not around"

I would think at 40 years of age you belong home working and building a retirement but if you are working in Thailand you should be very busy trying to money that you would not worry about such things. Ofcourse you might not worry about money and have all you need but why hang around Thailand, go travel.

The two worst source of information about local affairs in Thailand are The Nation and Andrew Drummond. The Nation has a clear anti Thaksin agenda and no real journalists, the only advantage is it's free, a clear reminder of "you pay peanuts, you get monkey" . The same can be said about A.D.

Then you have Stickman but Stickman can be funny so it's ok.

Drummond is a journalist with many years of experience writing for reputable news organizations. Stickman is a website selling advertisements for both male and female escorts, S&M clubs, Go go bars and other sex oriented Thai businesses. I don't think the two are comparable.

As I said Stickman is entertaining. So if you take it for what it is, it's ok

AD has other pretension. I personally think he's not up to it and he has an expat arrogant tone that I don't like.

But it's just an opinion, you're free to differ.

Drummond certainly manages to clean up the place! So many undesirables out there and I actually admire him for his one man crusades.

He certainly has balls!

Arrogant! Nah!

Just my opinion of course.

Like him or hate him AD does somehhing that very few journalists here in Thailand dare do - He investigates, reports and puts names to criminal activity, corruption and abuse of power here in Thailand.

Without his reporting people who weild power and influence in the expat community might quietly cover up their criminal activity, convictions and court appearances.

AD reports on stuff that others seemingly dare not touch and breaks the conspiracy of silence that crooks in Thailand are protected by. I'd give you a very specific example but that might only serve to prove my point too well.

he will keep doing it until he does it to the wrong person/group and gets his wings clipped, will anyone care?

Probably not..... Its not a job I would undertake

It's a shame that Thaivisa's two most famous Thai tourist police volunteers haven't commented on this yet. Transam is usually up for an entertaining 'I love helping people, me' type rationalisation.

As for the other member who was a member of the tourist police in Phuket - katabeachbum . . . . . . well, I don't know where he is these days. coffee1.gif

Well I hope your wrong. But be assured the prdiction you make is of an outcome that many who admire journalists who stand up and speak up about abused of power would care about.

The foundations of liberal plural society are built on people who are willing to speak up against criminality, corruption and abuse of power - more so when these crimes are commited by the connected and powerful.

I'm certain AD understands the risks, all the more reason to admire him for exposing the criminality he does expose.

I am in complete agreement with GH and that does not happen that often. And then you have the paid shills who disparage AD and I have to wonder what is their motivation.

I've found the "expat clubs" to be places to be avoided at all costs. Ongoing pissing contests, personal battles between members and some external shady characters whirring around like flies trying to get profit .. better be independent and collect the needed information from as many sources as possible.

What more motivation does one need than the shilling for shilling?

I hope you don't think Thailand aspires to be a liberal pluralist society?

I do wonder about the size of AD's cojones, sometimes I wonder if he's got a well-connected protector or two among TPTB and he runs story ideas past them to avoid digging too deep into areas that would otherwise get him disappeared?

What kind of clubs are you talking about?

I've never heard of any that anyone would consider useful for "collecting information". . .

Like Rotary and Lions? Aren't they dominated by Thais here? Or are there expat branches?

There are two expat clubs in Pattaya
