The wife is in the uk on a settlement: we've still got a while before we do the tests etc for ILR.

Planning to take my mum to New York for a birthday treat and obviously want to take my wife. How can we do this? Is it possible? What visa do we need to get?

You go to nearest US consulate and apply for a visitor visa. With her living in the UK it will be no problem. They will likely give her a 10 year multi entry visa.
