If you are still on an actual visa, obtained outside of Thailand at embassy/consulate, then it remains valid up to the permitted stay date.

If, however, you are on an extension of stay based on marriage , obtained at Immigration in Thailand, then it finishes on the same day as the divorce .

Staying on the extension,up to the permitted to stay date, may not be a problem, ( although illegal) if asked by police for passport you would still appear to have a valid extension, but if the divorce was acrimonious the ex-wife may shop you to immigration. You could change reason to stay to retirement if applicable or obtain 7 day extension. or maybe consider education, that is if you want to stay.

OK, so to take some stress off and to make it easy to stay in Thailand for the near future, I should get a new visa form a Embassy out side of Thailand to cover the next 12 months, (with 90 day border runs).

And what would you get it based on? Marriage at the moment???Also you would only get 90days from a neighbouring country as far as I am aware.

15 months actually, as you would get a new 90 days by leaving and re-entering just before the visa expires.

Savanakhet would give you a multiple non-O as long as you are still married and have docuemtns to show it, inlcuding copy ID and household registration of the misses and maybe a small note from her asking for a visa.

Glad Mario corrected me.

I thought the letter from the wife and copy of her ID card was a requirement in getting a visa from a consulate. Is this correct?

If you get an extension based upon marriage it also ends upon death of the spouse as well as divorse. Upon death or divorce the interior ministry does not notify immigration (only a vengefull ex wife could cause a problem). That means you would have some time to get your extension sorted out. IMO you probably could just go to immigration when your extension ends and change to another type. Remember if you have Thai children you can also change to that type of extension.

Reply to Beano2274. Yes you need marriage certificate, housebook ID card and etc. Having the wife along also helps no matter what consulate/embassy you go to.

Apparently Savanakhet has changed since I was last there about 4 years ago (not friendly at all). I hope that they keep giving out multiple entries for marriage because it's a lot less costly to make a trip there verses Penang or KL

Other than flying to Savanakhet or Nonkon Panom (SIQ) (short trip to bridge in Mugdahan)from Bangkok the most comfortable trip might be by train in sleeper to Khon Ken or Ubon and then by bus to Mugdahan. It's a very long bus ride from Bangkok. From Ubon it should only be about 3 hours.

Be carefull with continuing on an extension of stay based on marriage after divorce. Immigration might want to speak to the misses to make sure she understands that one makes a change in the reason of staying in Thailand. A change from marriage to children will also raise questions.

I can confirm immigration may require notification of wife for any extension of stay change from "Thai wife" so would not recommend prior to divorce taking place unless wife is well aware of plans.

Agree with you both. Again it all depends upon the exwife.

I think the worst that could happen would be immigration charging for an overstay (20K baht max) like they do if you loose your Job and don't do anything and go in for another extension using info from a new employer.

There is another option in case of divorce. Before getting divorced make a trip out and get a multiple entry O someplace if you can't do another type of extension.

I am legally married (7 years) and qualify for support visa extensions. Those types of extensions are scrutinized much more closely than retirement extensions. Because I am over 50 years old (way past), I choose to stay with the retirement option. That eliminates any problems your marital status my cause. I encourage my eligible friends to go with the retirement option if they qualify.
