Dual Passports

Featured Replies

My daughters have an Australian and a Thai passport. Their Thai passports have expired. We plan to visit Thailand soon for about 35 days, and we would like them to enter on their Australian passports, renew their Thai passports and then leave on them so that they don't have to leave the country to get an extension.

Is this possible? Could we face a problem?

Or would it be better to apply for a longer term tourist visa at the consulate here?

My Australian husband will be traveling with me, so can we apply for a longer term visa here for him too?

Hope you can help.

My wife went through this four years ago and because she entered Thailand using an Australian passport, she had to leave on the Australian passport. We had to leave Thailand and return leaving Australia on the Australian passport and entering Thailand using the Thai passport. We had no problems doing that, but having said that,I don't know of any changes since then that wouldn't make that possible now.

They can travel to Thailand on their Thai passport, expired or not, but can't leave Thailand on it. A new Thai passport would take half an hour and they send it to the address within 4 days. But to get a new Thai passport in Thailand the children must be on a household registration book!

If they are on a household registration, this is your best option.

They have to leave on the pasport they enter on. Note that there is no overstay fine for children under 15 years old, also on show of their (exired) Thai passport they can get a 1 year extension of stay without any problem.

As others have said, if they enter on OZ passports they must leave on them.

The can easily enter on the expired passports and get them done.

Otherwise, if you are close to a consulate on OZ, they may be in the position to process them there, so long as you aren't travelling anytime soon.

Thank you everyone for your answers.

Can you tell me how much the overstay fine would be if my husband decides not to leave the country just to extend his tourism visa?

He would face an overstay fine of 500 a day, with a maximum of 20,000 baht.

But without a visa he would need to have a ticket out of Thailand within 30 days of arrival or the airline might no let him board! Applying by mail for a tourist visa would be cheaper and easier and give him 60 days, to be extended by another 30 days if needed.

He could also get a single entry non-o visa based upon marriage to you. It costs 1000 baht more than a single entry tourist visa but it gives him a 90 day entry so you would not have to go to immigration for an extension (1900 baht) if you go beyond 60 days.
