National Warning Center: Heavy rain expected throughout Thailand

BANGKOK, 16 May 2012 (NNT) – The National Warning Center has issued the latest advice on the possibilities of scattered heavy rain throughout the country during the next couple of days.

The National Warning Center, on Tuesday, issued its first “Heavy Rain in Thailand” warning, dated May 15th, 2012.

The warning stated that high pressure front from China is now covering the upper part of Thailand’s northeastern part, while the southwestern monsoon active in both the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand is currently getting intensified.

As a result, Thailand is expected to experience more wet weather and also heavy rain in the country’s northern, northeastern and eastern regions as well as the western coast of the South from now until May 18th.

The National Warning Center has asked people residing in areas prone to risk from heavy rain, including flash and wild flood to be extra-careful.

It also warned ships on the western coast of Thailand’s South to be cautious while at sea as high waves in the Andaman Sea can be as tall as 2 meters during this period.

Storm hits North, Southeast; one killed in Chonburi

BANGKOK, May 16 – Some northern provinces were hit by heavy downpours and gusty winds and a woman was killed in Chonburi, southeast of Bangkok.

Wilai Kuwentai, 65, was killed in her sleep as a large tree branch hit her head. Her husband, Sawai, 62, was also injured as the branch hit his legs.

The Meteorological Department northern office in Chiang Mai warned of storms and strong winds through the week.

Khomsan Suwanampha of the northern disaster response office worked with the Chiang Mai municipality surveying damage from Tuesday night’s heavy rain to help affected residents. Large trees and billboards were toppled, damaging homes and vehicles.

In Mae Hong Son’s Pai district, a summer storm damaged houses and crops. Damage has not been assessed, and roads remain blocked by felled trees, but civil servants and villagers are working to clear the way to open the roads to traffic

The weather department warned of heavy rainfall and potential flash floods across much of the country.

A high pressure ridge covers Thailand’s upper Northeast, and a moderate southwest monsoon prevails over the Andaman Sea, the Gulf of Thailand and on land, nationwide.

The weather system carries more rainfall over Thailand with isolated heavy to very heavy rain in the North, the Northeast, the East and the Southwest coast.

Today through Friday residents in normally at risk areas should beware of possible flooding.

Winds are strong, and waves in the Andaman Sea are at a 2-metre level, with warnings to shipping to proceed with caution during the period. (MCOT online news)

well, if you consider May to be similar to the rains that fell in....what....August to be the same, then maybe there is a pattern! Or, that if it rains hard, and it floods, then that shows a pattern. Or, if its Thailand and raining, its a pattern. But otherwise, no, don't see a pattern.

I guess that's why the Thai people call it the rainy season.....

Warning for 2 - metre high waves in the Andaman Sea !!! easily seen these guys have never done any serious sailing because when you are plouging through 4-5 metre swells and waves in a yatch race, then 2 - metre high waves are welcome.

... I wonder how Thais will respond to what could be normal seasonal flooding.

... will it be viewed by Phue Thai opponents, maybe even disenfranchised Reds themselves, who scream it is uncontrolled flooding as last season, a consequence of the Phue Thai government's failure?

... though, if the waters rise as last season, there might be little doubt about how Thais will view it ... wonder if the Reds will remain tolerant, or throw the Phue Thai in front of the bus ... or, could Phue Thai use it as a pretense to bring Toxin back to take over a country in crisis ... "our saviour!"

To me it looks the same as last year and the year before and the year before and the year before. Same same. F.g.s its the rainy season again.....

I read about 3 ot 4 months ago, that this rainy season starts early..., and the earlier it starts the more probability of ,.... guess what folks????

It actually started earlier last year. For the rainy season to start now is approximately right.

We had a hell of a wind and rain Storm in Rayong lastnight. Uprooted a bunch of my trees. As we speak we are having the heaviest rain so far this year. Hopefully no flooding tonight. I'm worried if it keeps it up like this for the rest of the rainy season.

Same story in Ban Chang....half the trees re-planted today have fallen again already!! Still heavy rain but wind has died down here.

Last year in the rainy season for us the daily amounts were not the problem. It was the number of wet days. Normally we would expect to harvest rubber at least 10 days a month in a wet month. Last year we had 2 months with no harvest. The stream behind our house actually broke it's banks less than a normal year.

I'm in Phoenix Arizona right now and could sure use some rain. We have uncontrolled forest fires going. Anybody on here from the Lopburi provinces? How's it looking there?

I don't think they can see Arizona from Lopburi

Hopefully this will help the drought conditions in Hua Hin.
