Singing In The Garden

Featured Replies

every morning from 4am onwards being greeted by those flipping coucals at last we have a lovely singer morning and evening in our garden.i have seen 2 who seem to be together so lets hope they are mate's,this is the first time in 3years that i have heard them,black/white the size of a thrush looked them up,and no suprise they are from the robin family[oriental magpie robin] anyone else heard or seen them.

Its a common bird of gardens, parks & towns throughout the whole country, surprised its 3 years before you saw one. Largely overlooked, but yes they do have a nice song (occasionally see them in cages because of it)

yeah we got them every morning on the front terrace of our shop house where the wife has got lots of plants in pots and they 'harken the arrival of the day'...they all live in the marshland behind and there are loads that you can see rustling about from our rear terrace...the monitor lizard population keeps them in check...

it is surprising that i havnt seen these birds before as i spend most of the day in the garden watching diff birds bath in our fountain, ones that i do see every day are black/white but these have a fantail.

The ones with a fan tail are presumably Pied Fantails. An easy way to tell them is that they frequently 'high-tail' (erect and fan the tail). They make a stunningly beautiful nest, simple, but very elegant. It's placed on a branch, and is shaped like the bowl of a wine-glass (perhaps that's why I think it's beautiful!).
