Siam Sinfonietta to Take Part in International Competition in Vienna

BANGKOK: -- More than 50 members of a youth orchestra under the name 'Siam Sinfonietta' are set to participate in an international competition in Vienna, Austria in July.

Thai youth orchestra 'Siam Sinfonietta' has been invited to compete in 'Summa Cum Laude International Youth Musical Festival Vienna' at the Golden Hall of the Muskiverein in Vienna, Austria from July 7 to 11.

Conductor Tissadee Na Patalung, who will accompany his fellow band members on the trip, believes that their unique Thainess will give them an edge over other teams in this international competition.

Siam Sinfonietta was formed two years ago by renowned Thai composer, Somtow Sucharitkul.

Young musicians aged at least 12 years old have been selected to join the band under the concept of “youth musical innovation”.

The members get to practice from basic to advance playing techniques.

For this year, the band is set to perform Marler Symphony Number Six at three concerts dedicating to the memory of Princess Kalaya Nivadhana and to honor Her Majesty the Queen.

Apart from the competition in Vienna, Siam Sinfonietta will also get to perform in many European locations such as Munich and Frankfurt.

Afterward, the band will tour Europe with stops in Germany, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Thai webmaster guilty, jail suspended under royal slur law

BANGKOK, May 30, 2012 (AFP) - A Thai court on Wednesday convicted an online editor for hosting posts critical of the revered monarchy on her website, but suspended her jail sentence amid demands to reform the lese majeste law.

Chiranuch Premchaiporn was found guilty of failing to speedily delete comments by other people deemed insulting to the royal family from her popular news website, Prachatai. The Bangkok court fined her 20,000 baht ($630).

But Judge Kampol Rungrat, while sentencing Chiranuch to eight months in jail, suspended the sentence for a year, saying that she had cooperated with the court and had "never violated the law herself".

"The defendant cannot deny responsibility for taking care of content on her website," he said, adding she was initially given a one-year jail term but that this was cut to eight months for her "useful" testimony to the court.

She still faces further charges -- at a date to be set -- of breaching section 112 of the Thai criminal code which outlaws insults to the royal family and allows for a maximum 15-year sentence for every conviction.

Hers is one of several high-profile cases that have stirred fierce debate in Thailand, where authorities are accused of trampling on free speech by exploiting the strict "lese majeste" law against defaming the royal family.

On Tuesday, a petition signed by almost 27,000 people urging reform was submitted to parliament in the first mass action of its kind.

Over 100 Villages in Chiang Rai Province Threatened by Mudslides

CHIANG RAI: -- The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has reported that more than 100 villages in Chiang Rai Province are at risk of mudslides.

The Meteorological Department has issued a flash flood and mudslide warning for many parts of Chiang Rai Province, as these mountainous areas are situated on the sources of Kok, Lao, Kham and Chan rivers.

The areas normally experience flash floods and landslides every year.

Head of the Chiang Rai disaster prevention and mitigation office, Chettha Mosikrat, said that the province is susceptible to flash floods and mudslides, especially during heavy rainfalls.

He has pointed out that more than 100 villages in Mae Fah Luang, Mae Chan, Muang and Mae Suai districts, which are mainly hill tribe habitats, are at risk of mudslides.

In these areas, the disaster prevention must by done by manpower since there is not enough equipment to be passed around.

Some locals have been trained to spot dangers by checking the precipitation levels and river colors and to initiate evacuation if needed.

The district, local and provincial administrations are also ready to provide emergency assistance.

Thai webmaster gets suspended lese majeste jail term

image_201205301324469C6AFE10-B9CA-470D-79FD92172620C3C0.jpg

BANGKOK, May 30 - Thailand's Criminal Court sentenced a webmaster on Wednesday to an eight-month jail term, suspended for one year, for hosting Internet posts deemed insulting to the country’s revered monarchy.

Chiranuch Premchaiporn, Prachatai webmaster, was found guilty of failing to act in a timely manner to delete comments posted on the website which were deemed insulting to the royal institution.

The court also fined her 20,000 baht (US$630).

The high-profile case drew international media attention as well as concern expressed by human rights advocates, NGOs and related agencies as it was widely seen as a test of freedom of speech in Thailand.

Ms Chiranuch was the first webmaster prosecuted under Thailand’s Computer Crimes Act.

The court judges said Ms Chiranuch could not deny responsibility for managing the content of her website. She was initially given a one-year jail term but that was reduced to eight months for her cooperation with the court.

On Tuesday, nearly 27,000 eligible voters signed a petition urging lawmakers to amend the lese majeste law.

The move came after Amphol Tangnoppakul, 61, known as 'Ah-kong SMS’ or Uncle SMS died in jail early this month while serving his 20-year imprisonment for sending text messages the court found to be insulting to the monarchy.

One of the most publicised cases, it sparked an uproar among those who criticised the law as violating the freedom of expression. (MCOT online news)

Minister Slams Reconcilitation Law Opponents

BANGKOK: -- The defense minister slams opponents of the reconciliation bills for having tunnel vision and ignoring the problems facing the country.

Defense Minister Air Chief Marshal Sukumpol Suwanatat said those who oppose the government's push for reconciliation law have tunnel vision and do not want to do anything while praising those who support the law for giving cooperation in addressing the country's problems.

The minister said it is still uncertain whether enactment of the law will result in nullification of related court verdicts, adding the matter depends on parliamentary rules.

Sakumpol said Matubhum Party leader and sole MP General Sonthi Bunyaratkalin, who led the 2006 coup to oust the Thaksin government, should be hailed for correcting what he did in the past.

He added the army has nothing to do with any groups currently protesting at the Parliament House and their moves will be under a close watch.

Thai Rak Thai Politicians Mark End of Ban

BANGKOK: -- Former Thai Rak Thai Party executives release 111 doves to mark the end of their political ban.

Many former Thai Rak Thai executives hosted lunch for monks and released 111 doves at 11 A.M. today to mark their return to politics after the end of five-year ban.

Meanwhile, former prime minister and ex-Thai Rak Thai leader Thaksin Shinawatra also phoned in to their gathering and gave a speech in the afternoon.

Former acting Thai Rak Thai leader Jaturon Chaisaeng said the group from now on will focus on amending the current Constitution to be more democratic.

He maintained that the ban imposed on his group was unfair given the penalty was the retroactive use of constitutional power.

Another member of the group, Bhokin Polakul, said the charter's Article 237 on party dissolution must be scrapped and the judicial system and independent organizations need to be changed too.
