My rented house comes with a rock hard, cheap ass mattress. New mattresses are nice, but I also see the individual "pillow top" coverings you can put on a hard mattress to soften your bed. They range in depths of 1-3 inches. Of course a new mattress is very pricey while one of these coverings is not. BUT, do these coverings maintain their "fluffyness" or, since it's just stuffed with some soft material and no springs (like a normal mattress), do they have a tendency to flatten down (e.g. a 3 inch covering becomes a hard 1 inch covering after laying on it for a few months)?

Anyone out there have any experiences with these stand-alone pillow top mat coverings? They are nice and soft in the store, but do they stay that way for a long time (a good mattress can last 10 years or more).

Any info will be helpful.

Thank you.

Got the same challange. We really need to replace one of our mattresses soon. I think I will go with a proper mattress, instead of only the cover. The cover just does not give you the same feel. Unless you go with an expensive, real, memory foam type, the padding cover will not last long.

Unfortunately, you will get what you pay for. Inexpensive will not last very long. Depending on how good of a deal you get, 15-20KB are probably the minimum for an ok 6ft. Mattress.

Are you sure that you have a rock hard mattress?

post-104736-0-38851800-1338411927_thumb.

Every time I have rented a long stay room which is furnished, it came with a 'bed base' upon what the mattress would sit.

We looked at buying a mattresses, but since I was only staying 2 months in the Hotel we decided not to buy and used instead a doona which she had. Placed it on the Bed Base, then a fitted sheet over that it held in place.

Sure it was 'firm' but after many times sleeping on a Thai timber floor at the Farm ... sheer luxury biggrin.png

Hi Steve, I am quite interested. Could you perhaps take a pic of the receipt and share it?

Get one of the "stand-alone pillow top mat coverings." Over time it may compress a bit in the spot where you're lying, but you can turn it over and around. And it still feels OK. I've had one for several years covering my hard mattress and it's been satisfactory. Much cheaper than buying a really good imported mattress (30,000+), which is about what you need for optimal comfort.

often the thai rock hard mattresses have one side that has foam, and can be flipped. not all of course, but some

Thanks for the info. I'm in Chiang Mai. Home Pro is having a great sale (which prompted this post) and has a king sized Sealy on sale for 10,900 (normally 21,000 supposedly) plus another 5% off. The separate pillow cover is 2,900. I think best to go with the mattress (free delivery).

I find the mats used at good massage shops to be good value.

You can have them cut to any size you like, B3,500 for queen size is a fair price.

I have four over ten years old, two of them needed recovering on the underside, these were the ones getting the most vigorous usage.

The fact that they're covered in waterproof vinyl is a real plus, just have cotton slipcovers made up and then use the pad you're talking about under the fitted sheets.

I had a situation similar to yours. I am used to sleeping on a memory foam mattress in the west, but even the memory foam toppers are prohibitively expensive here. I tried sleeping on a typical Thai mattress in a rental, but found it too, too hard. I managed to purchase a 3 inch latex mattress topper imported from Europe at Robinson's (on sale) that made a world of difference.

Those kinds of places sell total crap without exception in my experience.

If you're going to be using it for more than a year or two, only two choice I'd recommend are the high-end imported brands at the expensive shopping centres, or the dense massage-style mats as I posted above (IMO much better value but perhaps a bit firm for some; I find them perfect myself).

Where ever you may be in Thailand, seek out a decent massage place, check out their mats if you like them ask the owner to put you in touch with the guy that makes them, easy peasy.

Mattresses seem to be totally random in quality.

I bought one for 3,500bht ...... instant backache.

Then I bought a cheap one for the spare bed 1,500bht ....... perfect.

Might be fine for the spare bed, but if you used it daily how long would it last?

I should note my mats do get a solid workout sometimes 3-4 hours a day not counting sleep time, and I'm heavier than the average sumo wrestler. . .

Year and a half so far, no problems yet.

I thought "spare bed" means one that doesn't often get used.

If not, then when you get a chance see what the brand/model is on the tags, I'm sure enquiring minds would love to know. . .

The toppers are ok. In a hot climate though i'd take a decent sprung Matt over a Tempur/memory foam one due to the heat retention issues.
