All westerners are doing this now in Pattaya ? whistling.gif

For the same reason Thai people resort to selling drugs instead of working. It's not a western thing it's a ..... I'd rather sell drugs than do other work thing and I'd rather not think about getting caught or think about going to jail.

They do this through greed or stupidity. Take your pick.

Maybe that's what they do at home ...

Here is another possibility .... maybe Thai drug dealers are not doing a good enough job and they are taking advantage of a needed market oportunity ..... Maybe you should blame Thai drug dealers for slacking off.

Desperation.....and when you go down this road you are a rancid murderous b*st*rd that deserves everything that's coming to you.

Did I mention I detest scumbag drug dealers?

Just sayin'

I know a few youngsters (Thai) who have done time for drug dealing, there per-day profit was an eazy 20K baht. there are some who can push alot more. i my self use to buy E, ice, ect and i don't blame a drug dealer for selling it to me. why should i? my choice,

my philosophy on the matter is that there is a large demand and for the people selling it would be like a same greedy addiction with cheap thrills as winning at the casino. easy money with an edge of going bust.!

As to westerners selling drugs in pattaya, well the sun there just fries your brain.

A daughter of a Thai friend of mine got three years for the bag of ice her bf had in the room they were sharing. Yeah....I am not a fan...of both drugs and Thai justice.

Because there's a lot of easy money to be made. Maybe they say they'll do it for a few days or a week to get through a rough patch..then it's easy to become addicted to the massive amounts of "easy" money to be made. Then it's a like a roller-coaster - hard to get off.

At the end of the day though doing it for any other reason than desperation to be able to feed yourself/family or put a roof over your head is down to greed and stupidity.

IMHO it's amazed me how many guys who've come out to the Los with a bag of money from the sale of their house or grannies left them something in a will, then promptly spunked it all on LBFM and ringing that bleeding bell to death, then wake up one after another drunk fest night on the tiles and realise after 6 months their potless! So What do they do? They turn to drug running dropping it and picking it up just for a bit of money and a piss damp bed because they can't face the fact of leaving the Los and going back to their miserable lives from wherever they've came from, just look at that farang tramp in pattaya I think he's German or Dutch and he won't go home even though he's skint he would rather tough it out on the beach, but IMO Thailand does stranges things to people that just don't Wana ever go home! Sorry dudes rant over BTW lol :)

Good summary. Also a potential Sawasdee in flight magazine short article.

:-)

There is no rule of law in Thailand & the Thai Police have zero credibility. I bet a majority of the Police would be jailed if the truth came out about what they are up to.

Who are they to go around enforcing the law?

How many innocent people have been railroaded by this 'gang' & have had a bag of yaba stuffed in to their pocket by corrupt police?

Exact same thing can be said about the Police. Addicted to the ease money.

They have no moral ground to be enforcing the law.

Well it'd make a pleasant change from " Dung Beetle Breeding In P'Lok " etc. that they usually put in it.

In fact I might be more tempted to fly Thai if Sawadee went tabloid style and had " Uni Girls Sell Sex For Meth - Candid Confessions" or " Top Chareon Girls Sex And Drugs Orgy - Pics Inside " on the cover

Giving up and going home isn't really a viable option unless you have access to several thousand dollars for plane fare and to start over. But if you had access to that kind of money, you could stay in Thailand for another 6 months. It's a catch 22.

As for why some expats in Pattaya live in squalor and/or sell drugs rather than go home, I'm sure it wasn't in (most of) their plans and it's a slippery slope. By the time you realize you're going to run out of money, it's usually too late to afford a plane ticket home.

Besides, have you ever added up what it costs to get set up in even a lousy apartment in the USA or Europe? First and last months' rent, security deposit, deposits for electric, phone, and gas, $$$ thousands for a used car to even start looking for a job, car insurance, food, clothing, healthcare, and on and on... And by the time you get that far down on the ladder, it all has to be cash up front because nobody's going to give you credit.

To be honest, I see those guys and I feel for them. There but for the grace of God goes I. (or something to that effect).

Desperation.....and when you go down this road you are a rancid murderous b*st*rd that deserves everything that's coming to you.

In the '20s, people said the same thing about rumrunners. Seems like barkeeps are respected nowadays.

Prohibition didn't work and neither do drug laws now. They just put the profits into the hands of those willing to break the laws.

Legalize it, control the quality and distribution, tax the beejeezus out of it and quit spending billions of dollars around the world to fight a battle that hasn't been won in hundreds, if not thousands of years. Use the taxes to build roads, schools, hospitals and rehab centers.

But, alas, I digress.

"Why Are Westerners Resorting To Selling Drugs To Stay In Pattaya Instead Of Just Going Home?"

For the same reason they resort to EFL teaching or selling condos: they have no money in the bank.

Thailand has plenty of farangs with no money who dont fancy going home.

Jake do you really think thier are so many like that ? I mean out of the millions and millions and millions that come every year how many do you see potless and selling drugs ? Is it really a big problem or is it more hype than reality ? I am not being retorical either I am really asking, because I don't hang out in the kind of seedy places one might find them so I don't really know. I have never personally seen a potless drug selling westerner so I haven't been able to ask him if he had any money from his house when he got here so I woulnd't know about that either.

What I do see is a lot of poorish people that seem to be here with visa's that are living how one would expect, I would also say that while it seemed odd to me the thread about going back home seemed to indicate that a lot of regular retired people have changed their lives enough so they can't really afford to move back home anylonger as well. My guess is the longer people are here and the less they care about going back home the more inclined they are to spend the extra money they might need to live back home because they have decided not to in the first place. A little off topic but my point is I don't think it's a problem just for the 6 month living high on the hog end up selling drugs types , I think it's a situation more people than we might think find themselves in but are smart enough not to sell drugs and don't broadcast it because it might be a little embarassing for them.

I think the number of stories about people blowing all their money in Thailand is more myth than reality personally , it makes for a good story but I doubt it's a very large percentage of people. The people I talk to in the Airports that lost their wives or houses don't seem especially pleased about it, but they are not exactly bankrupt either and seem to be moving on in life just fine.

I like your insights, when i was younger i did a lot of xtc. This was in Holland, but blaming the dealer for your own addiction. I think only the weak do that. Its like saying the bartender made you an alcoholic.

There are only around 7,000/8,000 western residents in pattaya. In the past month 3 Englishman, a German and Norwegian man been caught selling drugs. I guarantee there are hundred more who are selling drugs to support themselves.

They have every opportunity to go home, especially the younger men, as they have families to go to.

They just end up braindead, and addicted to the sex, drugs and alcohol .

New police force is doing well. Getting rid of the useless westerners.

I hope they do equally well for getting rid of the Thais that do the same crime. Not to mention the jet ski scam's going on.

But Thais just love to catch Westerners and act like Thais don't commit crimes.

Mind you i think they should be both caught though, i still believe anyone should be free to take whatever drugs they want. However that is not going to start soon here in Thailand so this not the place for that.

They are constantly getting rid of the Thais it just not publicised like the westerners are. They live here.

If you get caught with a few bags of ganja in England (being an englishman) you get a slap on the hand. It's no different to the Thais, they get a slap on the hand. Vice versa, they get the book thrown at them.

It's there country and it's embarrassing westerners are selling drugs to live here. That's why they are shown up, pointed at, laughed at, then straight to the monkey house.

Ive posted before about an acquaintance of mine who exactly meets this profile: a westerner who originally came out here on a good expat deal, got caught up in the nightlife, lost a succession of gradually crappier jobs as a result and ended up smuggling cocaine to maintain his presence here, because he didnt want to go home. Ironically he's a former TV member and was a frequent letter writer to the Bkk Post and nation.

He came here 14 years ago with a Big Six accounting firm. He was fired fromthat role for missing work through sustained drunkeness, and got fired from a succession of even worse jobs. His last job was with one of those shonky Forestry Investment companies, again the subject of threads on here.

After losing that job he had nothing. He resorted to ridiculous business ideas - making and selling model boats was one that made me laugh, and another was to take photos and print business cards for bargirls that he met in the Beergarden, for chrissake.

After a while we kept wondering why he was making so many overseas trips to, of all places, Madagascar. He claimed he was consulting to a supermarket chain, but he would never be pinned down on details.

My mates and I were meant to meet him one night eighteen months ago and he never turned up. A couple of weeks later we found out he was arrested in a room above a Washington Square bar wiht several kilos of cocaine - caught in an international sting. He's now doing 20 odd years in a Thai prison.

The irony is he comes from a wealthy family in Australia. His parents used to give him money but after pissing it against a wall, they told him they would old support him back in Sydney, not here. He refused to go. The rest is history.

Life over, all so he could be the big man in Soi Cowboy.

Are Thai prisons really better than going home??

Why not make a poll among the western inmates in Thai prisons ? They might have a better answer than non inmates on the forum. smile.png

Firstly the places I frequent karon or kata are not the LBFM beer bars because secondly if a Thai overhears you talking about so and so ain't got not money so he's selling sniff blah blah they'll grass you up & 10 more farangs like us, but being here nearly 13 years now you tend to accumulate friends and friends hence which is why I personally know 2 ex friends who ran skint and decided going back to England in mid January was not a comfortable option so hence got involved with some Thai girls to distribute some ya ba but then got grassed up by some Thai guy out of plain ole jealousy, so the moral of the story is if your money runs out in the LOS you'll quickly find no one is smiling at you quite like they did before

I lved in Pattaya since 2004 till late 2011, but spend time there each month. In all that time, I was only once ever offered "recreational chemicals". This was from German guy back about 2006 trying to sell Viagra or some such stuff. So, I wonder who all the farang customers are who are buying. Must be a market for a seller to prosper. I would imagine that a farang selling drugs to people he doesn't know (eg other nationalities) would have to be pretty desperate.

Thank you for this very insightful question ebmzim.

the answer is ; because they can.

You will find many other questions such as "Why are older men use the services of young prostitutes for a fragment of what they pay in their home land", or "Why are BG not turning into household fairy when you marry them, and instead try every trick in the book to strip you down to your last baht" have also the same answer.

I can't wait till you next question ;)
