DRUGS AND BULLETS INTERCEPTED

THE NATION ON SUNDAY

HAT YAI: -- Thai authorities yesterday seized 200 kilograms of kratom leaves, 500 bottles of cough syrup and 3,200 Alprazolam tablets hidden in 41 post packages sent to the South.

The items were posted from 19 sites in Bangkok to Hat Yai post office in Songkhla. Some boxes also were sent to a bogus name of a soldier in Narathiwat.

Officials also seized another package with 700 bullets in it. This was sent to Krong Pinang district in Yala.

In related news, police yesterday inspected the scene where a policeman and two family members were shot in Narathiwat's Bacho district late on Friday night.

Pol Lance Corporal Isma-ae Awae, 26, was shot by two gunmen while preparing for his wedding at his bride-to-be's home.

His uncle, Asae Awae, 41, fired back and injured one gunman. But Asae was fatally shot while Isma-ae's father Doloh Awae, 49, also sustained a gunshot wound while trying to help his son. The gunmen then fled with Isma-ae's and Asae's guns.

Police, meanwhile, searched a Bacho house yesterday belonging to Wae-uma Jahsaho, 65, and found a pickup truck with bloodstains in it. Drops of blood were also found on a path near the house, plus some bloody clothes. Police also found items suspected to be for bomb-making in the wooded area near the house. However Wae-uma maintained his innocence.

What's with the weird names? They don't sound very Thai-ish.
