Australian retiree dies in his bathroom.....murder.....?

5. January 2006, 19:53 Pattaya Today

Natural causes needs confirmation Mr Mick Carey, a 66 year old Australian from the Gold Coast, was found dead in his flat in Jomtien’s View Talay condominium complex after condo staff alerted the Sawangboriboon Foundation. Police at the scene initially refused to let journalists enter the apartment, quoting media restrictions recently introduced by national police chief, police general Kowit Wattana. The body was found on its stomach and there was a lot of blood on the floor and covering the corpse which had been lifeless for about 24 hours. There was extensive damage to the head and what appeared to be a hole in the throat. Police said it was likely that Mr Carey had collapsed in the bathroom following a stroke or an accident and had banged his head as he hit the floor. Murder could not be ruled out and an autopsy would be held in Bangkok.

Police added that robbery does not seem to have been a motive as some personal possessions and cash were still in the room. However, some residents in the apartment block pointed to Mr Carey’s heavy drinking and practice of taking young men back to his flat when he was already inebriated. The manager of the complex’s restaurant confirmed that he had on many occasions helped Mr Carey get back to his room in a drunken state. Mick Carey was a wealthy man of independent means who had held political office in Australia’s Gold Coast region and had invested successfully in property in both his home country and in Thailand. He had retired to Pattaya around 10 years ago and had initially kept up his sporting interests. In recent years his health had deteriorated and he had been warned by doctors to cut down on his drinking. Police are now awaiting a provisional autopsy report before deciding in which direction their investigation, if at all, should continue.

gburns57au - well it's news to me, and I suscribe to both The Nation and The Post and view several Thailand based discussion forums.

PCN - are you referring to Pattaya Cable News that you get down in Pattaya?

Anyway, what do you think about this case?

Me....I personally think it smacks of murder....particularly when you consider the victim's life style.

Extensive damage to the head and a possible hole in the throat. I suppose he hit his head 10 times as he collapsed while something pierced his throat on the way down.

Natural causes? Very doubtful, but then murder would be bad for the tourist trade wouldn't it.

The photos may be within PCN's questionable standards of taste, but not ours. I removed them.

From the PCN website dated 15th December

Australian man dies at View Talay 2 in Jomtien.

Police and rescue workers were called to the View Talay 2 Condominium Complex on Wednesday Afternoon to investigate the death of an Australian Man who had passed away inside his room. The dead man is Mr. Mick Carey aged 66 who had resided here in Pattaya for 10 years. The alarm was raised by residents who noticed a foul odor coming from the room on the 9th Floor. Police arrived and the door was forced open. The naked body of the man was discovered on his bed. The level of decomposition suggested he had passed away at least two days before the discovery which fits with a statement from a friend of his, Khun Wachirawit aged 40, the Manager of the Double One Restaurant who had gone out for drinks with the man on 13th December. He confirmed that he returned to View Talay and was helped to his room by a security guard who confirmed the man was heavily intoxicated. Police believe he had gone into his bathroom and fell causing a head injury which eventually killed him. The Australian Embassy have been informed of the death and for now the case remains open until the results of a post mortem examination are forthcoming.

further investigation resulted in an accidental death finding.....

It must have been some fall to cause extensive damage to the head, not to mention the possible hole in the throat. Sounds like the further investigation resulted in a cover up, but perhaps there's more to the story than was released.

"There was extensive damage to the head and what appeared to be a hole in the throat".....

.....and also a lot of blood on the floor.

It must have been some accident!

".....further investigation resulted in an accidental death finding....."

investigation by who?

If it was the local police then the finding must be considered extremely suspect, considering their past form in similar cases.

There was nothing about a throat wound in the original report, first I heard about that was on this thread...there was no sign of a struggle, no forced entry and nothing was stolen....it may have been in the Aussie newspapers where I read the findings.....apparently he went home full as a goog and went for a shower, slipped and hit his head....got up and went to lie or sit down on the bed and passed away from the injuries sustained in the fall.

Sorry guys....no cover ups or controversy about this one... :o
