TAGAB, AFGHANISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- A bomb blast hit a crowded market area in northeastern Afghanistan on Monday afternoon, killing five people and injuring more than a dozen others, officials said. Most of the victims were local police officers.

The attack happened around noon local time when a remote-controlled explosive device went off at a bazaar in the town of Tagab, which is located in Kapisa province in the country's northeast. There were dozens of civilians and security forces in the area at the time of the attack, local officials said.

Afghanistan's Interior Ministry said six people were killed, including five police officers and one civilian, while seventeen civilians were injured. "This is truly a sad incident that killed our security forces, and more importantly, killed one of our ordinary Afghan countrymen and injured 17 more who were just after their daily living needs," Kapisa Provincial Governor Mehrabuddin Safi said.

The governor condemned the attack and called on citizens to cooperate with security forces to prevent similar incidents in the future. "Insurgents have no respect and will probably continue killing and injuring more innocent Afghan citizens," he said. "I strongly condemn their acts and request from my fellow Afghan citizens to be alert and cautious and to report any suspicious activity immediately to Afghan security forces so that together we can prevent any such incidents in the future."

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
