Court hearing set for Aug 24 on Suphachai's vote buying

BANGKOK: -- The Supreme Court's Election Cases Division will on August 24 convene the first hearing on campaign violations involving former deputy agriculture minister Suphachai Phosu in 2009.

Thani claims HADR at U tapao has nothing to with NASA

BANGKOK, 20 June 2012 (NNT)-Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mr. Thani Thongpakdi insisted that the establishment of the Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) center at U-tapao military airport is independent of NASA.

The US Defense Department had proposed to Thailand to establish the HADR center at U-tapao, the project which was also favored by Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva. the then Prime Minister.

Mr. Thani claimed the project and the NASA’s mission to study the formation of clouds in Thailand are operated independently, despite both having been initiated by the US.

The Spokesperson added later that it was Thailand’s decision, without the American influence, to run the HADR, citing that it would do more good than harm to many nations in this region. However, he added, the project is still being negotiated and discussed whether participations from other nations are needed.

BANGKOK: -- The Public Health Ministry on Wednesday launched a health promotion campaign to reduce health risks among the country's 40 million people aged between 15 and 59, Public Health Minister Wittaya Buranasiri said.

Presiding over the ceremony to launch the campaign in Ayutthaya, the minister cited a 2009 report that one in 10 working people suffered from a chronic disease, the top three of which were coronary artery disease (32 per cent), diabetes (21 per cent) and respiratory disease (27 per cent).

The ministry would collaborate with Labour and Industry ministries to set the criteria for a disease-free, safe-environment business establishment to take care of employees who spent about 53,000 hours at workplaces.

The campaign will include campaigning for healthy food, no smoking and stress reduction. In the first year, it would have one pilot establishment per province and the three pilot companies were Honda, Toyota and Canon.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) said 19 billion people of working-age - including 170 million child labourers - were at risk of a health problem - and that 51 per cent of them suffered from non-contractible chronic diseases such as coronary artery disease.
