PM urges youths to refrain from all vices

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has called for Thai youths to refrain from all vices, as they will damage their brains.

Speaking to about 1,000 representatives of Thai youths from across the country at the "Prime Minister Meets the Youths" event held at Siam Paragon--Thailand's newly-opened shopping complex--Sunday evening, the prime minister suggested that alcohol drinks, smoking, gambling, narcotics and improper sexual relations are the vices from which the youths should refrain.

"I'd like to advice Thai youths from involving such the vices, as they damage your brains and reduce your consciousness. Sometimes, the government needs to control the induced environment to brake the youths from the vices," he said.

The participating youths reportedly had a good response to what the premier suggested, proposing that the government strictly control sales of alcohol drinks and opening hours of entertainment venues.

They said that open sales of alcohol drinks had led to several youth problems, namely conflicts, accidents, disabilities and even immature pregnancy with related social problems,

The youths also proposed stricter controls of film and drama advertisements, especially those wrongly promote the youths to be involved in the vices, as well as local media concerning youngsters, namely books, magazines and even on-line websites to prevent the youths from pornography, gambling and narcotics.

They proposed as well that teachers be trained to adhere to their good ethics, as teachers play a vital role in helping build the strong society and the nation through their teaching and good conducts--as role models to the growing youths.

The prime minister said he were willing to listen to the youths' opinions and ideas so that decision makers could build infrastructure and the environment which best suit the youths creatively.

He added that Thai youths now have more information than in the past.

The premier commended the youths for their brave speeches and expression of ideas.

The Thai leader said the government would consider the youths' proposals and ideas and asked them to gather more information for the authorities and raise their proposed ideas at the next gathering in separate groups of problems to be held here in late February.

Mr. Thaksin conceded, however, that in practice there would be some difficulties in controlling local media.

He encouraged the youths' participation in producing materials beneficial to their good development, promising financial and technical supports from the government.

The youths gathering at the event were from secondary schools and universities, as well as youth organizations and networks nationwide.

PRIME MINISTER THAKSIN GATHERED IDEAS AND VIEWS ON SOCIAL ISSUES FROM THAI YOUTHS

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra met with the representatives of youths from across Thailand at Siam Paragon yesterday, listening to their opinions on problems affecting youths.

More than a thousand of youth representatives came to the event to exchange their ideas and opinions. Issues that youngsters urged the Prime Minister to address quickly included the control of entertainment parlors and other shady places near educational institutes, narcotics, gambling and alcohol-related problems. They proposed that the age restriction for the buyers of alcohol should be raised from 18 to 21 years old. They also demanded the government to control obscene media, as they have become easily accessible. They also called on the media, especially the television media, to recognize impacts of demonstrating pictures or news that can be imitated by youngsters. The children also proposed that a youth parliament be set up for youths to debate on issues.

Meanwhile, Prime minister Thaksin said that he will give budgetary support for youths who want to organize creative activities during the school breaks.

PM urges youths to refrain from all vices

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has called for Thai youths to refrain from all vices, as they will damage their brains.

Any irony in the location of the "meeting?"... too bad needless, excessive shopping isn't a "vice"

"I'd like to advice Thai youths from involving such the vices, as they damage your brains and reduce your consciousness. Sometimes, the government needs to control the minds of youths ," he said. (edited for honesty)

How nice for these "planted" teens in the audience to speak up for stricter controls... saves Mr. T from having to do so. When I was a teen, myself and thousands like me, often asked for stricter control of our lives.

But he did reiterate his long-established policy that they must be from TRT Party-controlled provinces...otherwise their opinions don't matter.

He added that Thai youths now have more information than in the past.

....and that's a dangerous thing. He'd prefer everyone to stay ignorant.

The premier commended the youths for their brave speeches and expression of ideas.

Particularly those ones who spoke up as they were paid to.

The Thai leader said the government would consider the youths' proposals and ideas and asked them to gather more information for the authorities and raise their proposed ideas at the next gathering in separate groups of problems to be held here in late February.

Once again, however, he did reiterate his long-established policy that they must be from TRT Party-controlled provinces...otherwise their opinions don't matter.

Mr. Thaksin conceded, however, that in practice there would be some difficulties in controlling local media.

But he reassured them that his league of lawyers would continue to hassle the media he didn't directly control and that he league of business partners would continue to try and buy up all the remaining media outlets so as to control them.

He encouraged the youths' participation in producing materials beneficial to their good development, promising financial and technical supports from the government.

The youths gathering at the event were from secondary schools and universities, as well as youth organizations and networks nationwide.

They were hand-picked for their ability to spout the government's established policies with believability and conviction for which they were handsomely rewarded, albeit not as handsomely as his previously met-with group of taxi drivers..
