June 23, 201214 yr I run an office in Bangkok and also work from home neighbouring province. I would like to be able to access the computers in both locations, ideally being able to connect to my office network, search, and make changes to files and folders. One of my computers is running Windows 7, while the others are XP. I'm told there are free programs that can help me. Anyone have suggestions? I'd like the one that is simplest to use and set up.
June 23, 201214 yr A simple ftp programme may suffice? I use FileZilla to manage and transfer files to and from my remote site.
June 23, 201214 yr Ftp is ok for file sharing but some complexities and security issues for average users. Better bet is something like logmein. Full access to files AND software. Simple to setup and use. Free version is fine and a few more features pretty cheaply. Teamviewer is another alternative but not quite as easy and useful for these tasks in my opinion.
June 23, 201214 yr I use teamviewer, mainly to give remote support, but also good to move files around etc... Haven't used logmein yet, main selling point for teamviewer was to be able to access remote computers using android phone/tablet, at the time I did my research logmein did't have this feature yet... Just have to be careful, as they are free for personal use, but when they think you use it for business purposes, they force you to upgrade to the commercial version and they ain't cheap! June 23, 201214 yr I use logmein for critical access to some research machines at the lab, or when I have forgotten a file at work and can transfer it to my home computer. Logmein does have an adroid app, iphone app and tablet capability.
June 23, 201214 yr use Teamviewer, I use it all the time between computers in Latin America and is quite good and stable. cheers
June 23, 201214 yr Try Remote Desktop, if you are using a business version of Windows then you *already have it*, and it is much more efficient than most of the third party options. However, you need to run it over a VPN connection for security reasons. I suggest the Hamachi VPN, its free and almost no configuration is required.

Very efficient once set up, but not so easy for the uninitiated when on a dynamic IP address... Which is the strong point of products like teamviewer and logmein. No dyndns or the likes, no portforwarding, even works when the client sits on a 3g connection with a private ip address and all incoming connections blocked! Sent from my GT-S5660 using Thaivisa Connect App True, but one of the benefits of Hamachi is it solves the dynamic ip problem and handles NAT traversal as well.
