been here 2 months. the more i know, the less i like it.

becoming a super pretentious pothole full of scam artists whove garnered their spoils through one plot or another.

if you can turn a blind eye to half the people who live here and the pace at which the place is trying to conform to their lifestyle, then its heaven.

Move out of the tourist zone.

its not where i live (im nowhere near the tourist zone), its just the general feel when youre out and about town.

This is in reply to one of your later posts.

I wouldn't exactly call loi Kroh a non touristy area.

Yes there is a lot of Asians coming in now. And for sure they will have a affect on the businesspeople. For sure the bars are going to be changing. I also noticed this year women. They seem to be coming in groups now. As well as families.

Perhaps because you can understand Thai it would make a difference on your opinion of them. I don't speak it or understand it. Well just a little but that means I don't generally here what they say about me.

I suspect you will be moving along soon then. If Thailand is your thing I am sure you will find what you are looking for. For myself the beach would be nice. But Alas every where has it's drawbacks. And to be honest with you I have had enough wild and whakey ( my spell check said whiskey had that too) days. Now I just want to take it easy. Maybe go for a chat at a monk chat. Or a movie Dine out just simple life.

IMO the problem is with some of the westerners is that they cannot distinguish between Thais and other asian nations. I find this very sad. They can lisiten to the language but have no idea.

music will always be better in farangland

not between november 7-14 th when Keb Darge and Guy Hennigan will play Thailand.

yes thank god they have replaced the poppies with high quality tea

so on that point cm is better]

I still can't figure out why you're here if you think CM today is worse than the drugged out 1980's.

For me CM is getting worse though I have lived there for only about 3 weeks in 7 visits during the past year. Every time I visit it's getting more like Bangkok. In fact, I feel all societies in the world are getting worse. Most call it progress but I don't feel such when I see the demand of individual rights overshadow respect, trust, concern, and love.

I can't see why people criticizing your English as it seems to me it may be deliberate. Your style reminds me of another poster by the name of CM Homeboy.

I think the same can be said about everywhere in the world. More people, more development, more pollution, more everything.

Even where I grew up back home, where it used to be beautiful country side and everyone knew each other, now has sold out to endless home developments where they have 50,000 homes that all look alike, traffic from hell, mini mall at every highway exit, and overall just general crap. You couldn't pay me to live there now. Things change.

There are no more unmarked places on the map. This is all we have and no matter where you go, people will eventually follow you.

I have not been in CM for a long time but I enjoy it. It has just enough everything to keep me occupied, the weather is great, and I avoid rush hour traffic times. No worries.

I lived in Cm for three years. I just moved out in January. For me CM was better than Chonburi, and way better than Bangkok. In the sense that it had a certain character to it, a bit more human or small townish. I found it to be boring in a good way, and there is an excellent selection of goods and services that are somewhat easy to locate. I would say it is the best place in Thailand to get what you need because they have a bit of everything and it isn't that hard to get from place to place.

Now I live in the sticks and there are different advantages, but I miss being able to drive to a specific store store when a need comes up.

I really miss Global house now because I am renovating.

I think what the Op is wanting is somewhere without progress and where time stands still.

Well if the OP actually hails from WIGAN as his username would suggest, he was already in that place before he started traveling as any Englishman will verify

I think that you're right. People complain everywhere about this . What is the cause? Movies, Drugs, Crime, Hip Hop Music, Parenting, Money, Greed, Pressure, Chemicals in the food and water, Chem Trails???

Yes I noticed that his spelling mistakes are deliberate. There is a spell checker after all. Seems like he wants to be provocative, to shock us.

Maybe a former punk, Sex Pistols fan. A kind of art we don't get. Maybe he's more aware of somethings.... Bless him!

Things change, things change, rinse repeat.

But reading through these posts all I can think of is Monty Python's Four Yorkshire men sketch, and that was 1971!

Things do change, all life is transient, etc etc, unfortunately some people's miserable outlook does not. Apprecaie what you have, and folks that is in the here and now.

Some posts remind me of my first meeting with expat Rhodesians, which were quickly nick named "whenwewozs".

"when we was in Rodesia we......(fill in gap)"

Air quality and traffic: worse. Quality of Westerners moving here: worse.

Air quality is another thing that's better than before. Go look at the numbers. It also seems true that many people didn't notice the yearly haze in their first years, but that's an interesting thing with those people.

Hhahah this is hilarious.I almost chocked on my cornflakes IF i was inclined to eat sugar infested health foods, which i am not.

Well on the 2 days i have posted here most of the time has been personal attacks

Today it is Wigan.

Wigan is famous for one thing only and no it is not Wigan pier

people in the know know what it is as every English man should know

sorry that fact will be above such estemed members as the ones here.

To make it clear, i am only passing through CM .It so far has been 6 months out of a total of 15 months in Thailand

The rest of the time has been spent on my organic garden in North Thailand and yes with gardening experience of over 30 years i do know what a lemon looks like,i even know what a young lemon tree looks like,

I wonder if the esteemed members who mocked me do..

Oh the garden is paid for as well as the house that was built on the land

No debts to cooperate banks at all

I am in CM to follow up my on going learning of enviromental issues

On this point Cm has improved for the better

There is increased knowledge of the impact commercial and one crop farming is not only doing to the enviroment in general but also to impoverisjhig the life of the faily to a life of poverty and slavement to the middle men,who take hteir hard crafted crops from the mountains to bigger markets

that is CM or Bangkok.

Again i say there is improvement in CM on this issue

Use of more plastic bags in Cm and the vilages WORSE.

On the issue of pollution

I certainly was not aware of it on my first visit to the North of Thailand,

and even in my localalised state at the time,

I was there for 2 months so even i would have been able to see through the haze of my mind

Now my localised intergration with the people of that region is to support them by buying their high quality teas which i have stated before

again on that fact CM and Thailand as a whole has improved a lot.

the life of the hill people selling their wares has also improved financially as you can see many hill tribe people selling from permanant stalls or booths as the northamericans call them

,but has it improved their inner quality..

there is now a chance to buy organically produced food

so Cm has improved on that point

before you could only get organic if you were high in the hills and with farmers who really couldnt afford even the cheap pesticides that companies have aggresively promoted in the name of progress

Progress is another topic, which i am happy to discuss on another thread

oh yes was bored when i came on this site

but i came on to answer a question honestly and with good intentions

about the cost of living

that is another thread and yes i got attacked and belittled and called a liar basiically

Jackie Stewart is a good role model for me

bad speller,dyslexic,no education

as was Gandhi ji where i stayed at his ashram for many months

he had many thoughts on progress

right need another cup of chia me thinks

IMO the problem is with some of the westerners is that they cannot distinguish between Thais and other asian nations. I find this very sad. They can lisiten to the language but have no idea.

We've just come back from Bali where all the Baliineese insisted that my wife was Balineese and not Thai so it's not just a western problem.

But back on topic, is CM changing for the better or the worse, based on my experience last night I would have to say the change is for the worse. Walking along the river between Riverside and the Narwat Bridge around 9pm there's a car parked somewhat remotely and the inside light is on and the passenger window is open, the occupant in the passenger seat is a fifty year old (or so) Thai female who is naked from her neck to her waist, I couldn't see who or what was in the drivers seat. I spotted this from some distance away and as I got closer I looked straight ahead and ignored it all, the stares as I walked by drilled into my peripheral vision. So, exhibitionism by locals has arrived in CM, certainly a first for me.

"The Road to Wigan Pier"

The black thumbprint on the slice of bread and lard and the warm bed as one shift worker got out to go to work and the one who came home gets in, is priceless. As famous as the book is, I still think the best thing to come out of Wigan was the late, great George Formby.

Which is why they all started speaking to her in Balineese, expecting her to respond to questions, hmmm, I don't think so!

We were later told by Balineese hotel staff who spoke English that the average Balineese wouldn't know the difference between Indonesians and natives of most SE Asian countries because they don't see enough of them to be able to distinguish.

In Krabi several years ago, the Thais thought my northern Thai wife was Japanese......
