July 7, 201214 yr I'm talking the general attitude among Nakhon people. Thailand is well known for not being generally open minded but down in the south it's just plain obvious. The only reason they accept McDonalds and KFC because these franchises are everywhere so it's more of a status for them than anything. Heck, some of the people here even believe KFC is Thai because it has always been here but as soon it comes to anything remotely foreign and I'm not only talking about farang here, then it's definitely not welcome. "No thank you , we are fairly happy with our Geang Som and Khao Mok Gai, doesn't matter that most of our kids hate it this defines who we are. " And that welcome wagon greets you every time you come by and I'm not saying this out of disrespect for a certain group but even the moslems are more forthcoming than the regular Thais down in the south, especially to foreigners. That should tell you a thing or two. This is however going to change whether they like it or not. Since Chevron got a foothold here now, there is bound to pop up more and more cafes, restaurants or facilities to accommodate the new people. I don't understand the part with KFC and McDonalds. I actually don't eat it as well as it is unhealthy junk food without culture. But it hasn't anything to do with being friendly?
July 7, 201214 yr Right in your own neighborhood, if you are friendly to the Thais around your own home place, you'll find some of the most friendly people on earth. Just don't be a loud ass_hole, flaunting money around like it was water, and thinking you are better then them. Try it, smile and give a s_hit about them as people, you may be surprised. With that logo?? I consider it as unfriendly if some commie mob burns down my house.

Yeah you missed the point, they don't want any foreign food in the city except for these two junkfood chains and that's because that's sth they recognize and think of as their own.

If they don't want foreign food they failed...NST is full with foreign food. Pizza Company, these foreign cake and ice cream shops, Japanese food, I even ate German Wiener Schnitzel there. And of course a zillon Chinese food. Also a lot Isaan food. I recall a Steak house as well. OK they don't like Chevron, but that is because Chevron with Thaksin are stealing their Oil and Gas. But they hate some corrupt locals the same and who wouldn't.

But they hate some corrupt locals the same and who wouldn't. How long has it been since you were in Nakhon? PIzza Company is not made by farangs, no westerner would do something so blasphemous as putting weenies and cheese in the crust. The steak houses you saw are Thai steak houses, which means the meat that is slammed to the platter is not even remotely close to a western steak and if by Chinese food you mean Khao man gai and Dim sum , well they aren't made by the Chinese now are they? It's something that the Thais have adopted and made into their own traditional breakfast. The Thais in Nakhon don't hate Chevron because of Thaksin, they just hate changing their peaceful place of apathy into a working place where people actually do get money by working. I take it that you either have a gal from Nakhon or was there as a teacher because there can't be many reasons to visit a place like Nakhon so please don't involve your biased political view which I highly suspect you got from your gal or friends there because one... I think both sides are equally bad and two... this is not a political thread, don't try to make it into one.
July 8, 201214 yr Author I've noticed that in some tourist areas, thai's are usually more friendly towards me because of my knowledge of the Thai language with the exception of Hua Hin, Chang Mai and Pattaya. When they see me sharing knowledge with other westerners it seems problematic! Especially in Laos doing a border run in Vientiane and warning the drunken expat man "Hey, thats a DUDE you got between your legs there mate". The westerner usually is stunned and flabbergasted of the truth, while the LB is furiously flipping me off calling on her LB clan to stake me out and snipe me down. Sometimes giving useful advice can backfire, Iam starting to see how SILENCE can be my best answer. Anyone, can you hear me? I need to speak more Isaan/Lao...
