To be honest Kerry i've been to all the shopping malls on numerous occasions in Pattaya and i don't consider any

to be full of hookers, it's just that some people on this thread need to make up stories to try and convince themselves that what they're trying

to say has any truth in it.

Last time i was in Hua Hin there wasn't any shopping malls so that would also explain why there isn't any hookers in them too.

As for beaches Hua Hin beach was ok, but nothing special, Chai am beach down the road though was much nicer.

There were plenty of farangs in Hua Hin too, together with many ladies looking for, lets say companions.

So all in all Hua Hin is certainly a scaled down version of Pattaya, just on the other side of the Gulf.

No Central shopping mall is full of fat farangs with ugly hookers everytime I've been there. Beach road is lined with hookers at night. Even just walk out of central shopping mall down the sides and the bars are full of hookers.

I stay at the Dusit in HH further out of town lovely beach, but the town beach is still far better than Pattayas.

If it is a scaled down version of pattaya can you tell me where the go-gos are in HH so I can go next time.

Would it be better if they were skinny Farang and beautiful hookers. When were you at Central? Central is the new mall with the new Hilton! I think maybe you are confused.

So if you are a grandfather and want to see the grandchildren get yourself a house in Florida and they will come. But this thread is not about kids or children having fun. It is about bible thumpers and evils of loose (and sometimes tight) women in Thailand. Which is really a common theme here on TV and frankly getting a bit old.

I think you've all missed the point. Pattaya is not about old fat blokes and scraggy tarts. Its a beach resort, and not a very good one, but very convenient for people who live in South East Bangkok. Its also a very easy place for Westerners like Brits or Americans or Russians to get by in, so quite a good place to take the family.

Unless it was a VERY long time ago, you must have missed the mall. Of course, as they built it in a terrible location, it would be easy to not realise that Hua Hin does have one.

Sure... Pattaya has its charms... families can stay at Centara Grand Mirage... highly recommended.

DO NOT go to Mini-Siam. Its more like mini-slum... and they do double pricing for non-Thais. Its old and dumpy anyway... check the reviews.

Siam Water Park in Bangkok (Minburi) was 250 a pop but yearly pass was paltry 480B.

No way Disney in Thai can have enough public at prices they need to break even.

As I said earlier, I think Pattaya is far from perfect, and would like to know some alternatives (especially from those who would never take kids to Pattaya).

Would anybody like to make some suggestions where in Thailand I can take my kids for a weekend away from Bangkok (other than Pattaya)?

Yes Hua Hin is much nicer if you're looking for a couple of family days near the beach. Beaches you can actually walk on, build sand castles, collect shells etc. Sam Roi Yot national park is also not far

Chiang Mai flower festival, King's palace, highest point in Thailand etc.

Phuket only a quick flight away lots of tourist stuff. Patong for busy tourists. Nice beaches to the south in Kata.

Yasothorn - short flight for Bung barn fai rocket festival

Ubon Ratchathani - short flight for candle festival

Chaiyaphum for its dok krachiao flower festival

Kanchanaburi for lovely countryside

Ayuthaya

Sukhothai

Bangkok has it's fair share too for kids day outs, water parks, mini city, parks, trip over the river to Phrapa Daeng "jungle". All the toursit stuff like Grand Palace, Khlong boat rides, museums etc if you don't live there and never been

Thanks for the ideas. We have actually done most of these (admittedly without realising they were family holidays per se). You have also mentioned some we haven't done (and should do).

Back on topic, I think (also backed up by this thread) where Pattaya excels is the variety of commercialised children's activities (theme parks, water parks, family hotels, etc) rather than just being a nice place.

Not to mention the food...... Many outlets of KFC, McDonalds, Burger King, Pizza Hut, Pizza Company, Swensens etc. etc. whilst perhaps not everybody's cup of tea - very important for keeping kids happy!

One thing not mentioned about Pattaya's child friendliness is the quality of healthcare if something goes wrong which, although it is obviously of more significance to us residents does have some bearing on visitors.

As an example which brought this home to me a couple of days ago, my daughter woke up in the middle of the night a couple of days ago with a lot of pain in her ear. From making the decision that she needed a doctor it took 40 minutes to get her to a high quality hospital, checked out by a doctor, medicated and back home in bed fast asleep. If I were still in my wifes village where I lived for several months we could not even have got to the local non-provincial hospital in 40 minutes.

I haven't seen Samui mentioned as a possible destination. Easy to get to, nice beaches, hotels near or on the beach for good prices. Lamaii Beach is pretty laid back. But the flights into Phuket would make that destination desirable as well.

My concern is the quality of the beach and even Jomtein Beach is kind of sad. Or it was when I last stayed there.
