I read about that somewhere a few months ago. A Tory from memory. And I remember Major doings something that led to a massive expansion of the numbers of universities too. Not long after I got a job after college, all of the Polys where I used to live ended up being a 'University'. Employers used to come to my college to recruit because with did a course that was 50-50 theory-practical (electronic and electric engineering) - they, including the one that recruited me, didn''t want Uni graduates as they couldn't even wire a plug despite having a degree. Very true in that ex-company, normally around 90% of the graduates they used to recruit were totally useless, got promoted as time went by, making the company more and more useless over time. And in the 90s Tony Blair said there should be 50% of youngsters doing degree courses. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Hope Burnham's plan works. Not because I love him or the Labour Party, but because it's right.
