Older/Classic Cars

Recommended Posts

Mk 1 Escort, I took a pic of at Bromley Peageant some 5 years or so ago. Some time and money gone into this one.

I am a bit of a classic car enthusiast, used to go to all the shows.

My weakness though was for Nissan Skylines, classic Jap cars ? :-)

A good few years ago I was offered a 4.2 in bangkok, somewhere around Lad Phrao, sprayed black by Artex co ltd, toyota engine, wrong wheels, something or other seats, no door or interior trim, holes in the door shut panels and more fibreglass than the local boatyard. All this for only a million.

Anyway when I looked at the photographs of the 5.3 in this thread I had to go and lie down in a darkened room for a while

yuck! w00t.gif

As my mother would say , "not what you're thinking, you dirty little boy"

Merely overcome by a fit of jealous rage biggrin.png

my "yuck" referred to the E-type description!

Are you talking about repairs or a fibre glass body bolted to a steel chassis ?

i am talking repairing sheet metal parts (e.g. fender or doors) with fibreglass mats. but you gave the answer already.

The key with fibre glass is a key. No use bonding to smooth metal, rough it up and there you go. smile.png

As body rot appears not to be an issue here, running an older car here is engine and mechanical parts, or the lack of them.

Easy + cheap to get a 2nd hand Japanese engine and stick in, or wait for months trying to get parts from somewhere..

Some conversions I do find odd, Volvo 164 [6 cylinder] with a Nissan 1500 cc engine !! around where i live have seen 3 different Triumph 2000 saloons all have Toyota engines, one I have spoken to at length has a 2.5 engine and gearbox with suspension and brakes, in the next road there is a Morris 1000 traveler, no idea what engine, but when they put there foot down it has a deep roar and is automatic.. [V6 ? V8 ?]

All within 5 km of where i live there are 2 Volvo's 121 Amazon, one I know is 100% original, Austin A35 Van used every day [red and black !] 4 houses down in the Village 2 visitors that come often, one has a Allegro, the other as a 1100. Rover 2200 TC, dark brown. early Morris Oxford green in nice condition.Mk1 Ford Transit black [never seen another in Thailand]. 2 Ford Capri, one is from Germany and LHD, a number of old Benz's both RHD and LHD, same with old VW's different models, and about 8 different US cars one being of the 1940's... 2 Jag XJ one being in showroom condition one owner {Thai] bought new and everything is 100% original.. number of 1960's and 70's Japanese cars, often see an old 1950's Fiat driving around.

Sure I understand about a classic + being 100% original...... Now being old and not wanting to be fixing a car on every trip, a 2012 car with a 60's body is appealing, or is that a 1960's car with 2012 running gear ?

Seems we are back where we started.

Find a classic/older car you love. If it is small transplant a small Japanese engine, if a larger car drop in a 1uz 4 ltr or LS1-6 and have real performance, proper noise, chilly aircon, good fuel economy super reliability.

If you like American cars take a look on Youtube for the GM Tunnel of Love, I don't know how old it is but it's interesting.

What people pay for their old/classic is to my mind a personnal thing as is the differing opinions as to what is a classic.

A 'classic' should be a small volume production model that was totally different from the normal run of the mill 2,500,000 saloons etc build for the masses 'old car'.

Classic are for example plywood chassis Marcos,Lotus Europa (fastest bread van in the west) MGC Daimler Dart etc.

Old cars can be interesting but are not classics

A morris minor is not a classic car, it's an old car and sometimes the front wheel would fall off when you pulled away with the front wheels turned. Next thing is people will be saying the Allegro was a classic because it had a square steering wheel which was called a quartic wheel to make it sound up-market.

Rant over, too much falling down water last night

Thats daft. American cars were built in their millions in all decades and they are ''sculpture'' classics, many out there still remain. My pal in UK drives a 1955 Chevy, built in their 100's of thousands and is now a classic. smile.png

The cars you are talking about are interesting old cars that are now rare because of the years that have gone past and were mass produced as big v8 muscle cars that were fantastic in a straight line but for Gods sake don't brake too hard or try to turn a corner, by the way I like themsmile.png

Classic cars can be relatively rare in their time of production, they are very different from run of the mill cars, Morgan for examplesmile.png

How any car drives has no baring what so ever on it not being a classic car.

Morgan are still producing the same car today as the original designs, except for technical upgrades. So to me a Morgan is not really a ''classic'' as you think cos they still make em. UNLESS your talking about the three wheel jobby with a V twin Jap bike engine strapped the the front. smile.png

In my long life I've only ever seen one face to face. Can remember a Sellers movie where Clusso drove one, Can't remember the title of the movie though

Along time ago a school friend's dad had a Gordon-Keeble, ever seen one of those ? Was famous for it's 2 gallons to the mile consumption (exageration of course but not far off the mark). Some owners had a second gas tank to ensure a decent time interval between fill-ups, beautiful car though.

Believe only 98 or so were made.

As far as I know it used a 5.4 litre Chevy V8

Think we must also mention the Rover V8, which was upgraded at times and fitted in many vehicles other than Rover. Morgan, MG, TVR come to mind. BUT, this was not a Rover designed engine. The design was bought from GM USA, and was a Buick engine which GM didn't want as it was a more complicated engine cost wise to produce, so the Brits bought it laugh.png . Good engine and light weight but.....!

How us Brits could not make a V8 is beyond me but Daimler got close with their beautiful 2.5 and 4.5 Hemi V8. smile.png

Believe Buick were the only people interested in spending the time and money on the research and trials for casting lightweight alloy blocks and heads.

It was easier for the British car industry to buy them rather than spend on research coupled to the fact that the British lot probably couldn't get their heads around anything with more than 4 cylinders for a production car.

Similar attitude as the British bike industry,---No-one will ever buy those cheap Japanese things--

Aston Martin V8 ? original design by a resident Polak but still arguably a British engine.

Must say the Daimler V8 is 1 of the most beautiful sounding engines ever fired up. Designed by Edward Turner who also designed the Ariel Square Four and Triumph Speed Twin motorcycle engines. Never heard the 4.5 but the 2.5 in the Daimler 250 and Dart was a cracker. If only they'd of made a Daimler version of the E Type with a tuned 4.5.

They put the 4.5 Daimler in their big saloon, sorry, can't think of the name. smile.png

The Aston V8 is a dream engine. I have looked at the internals but it is way out of our finances. Did lack a bit of grunt until the turbo was introduced. I have a valve and valve guide from one in my possession here in LOS. whistling.gif

Maybe should have started this as classic/old vehicles.

Ariel square four, went like a bat out of hell but keep two fingers on the clutch coz if you ran it too hard too long the back two cylinders would seize, slightest missed beat from the engine and you had to do an emergency stop, great fun though when you're young

Is this a classic ?

I had one back in the 60's cost me 30 GBP biggrin.png

Sunbeam Rapier, I think,

Collectable for some but not a 'classic'. Built, obviously before what's ee's name was in charge of BL, Edward something or something Edward who was responsible for turning a nation filled with interesting and inovative cars into the equivalent of KFC and Big Mac. I'll stop there

On the beach all day and too much falling down water.biggrin.png .

If it's still going then l think yes. Sunbeam Rapier, being a part of the Rootes group which included Hillman, Singer and Humber, if l remember right. I had a 1966 Singer Vogue auto. Nice car for the era. smile.png
