Somchai The Most Popular Male Name.

Featured Replies

My suspicion confirmed, spotted this in our local rag today. "Somchai" is the most frequent name given to boys in Thailand, with about 240,000 Somchais registered throughout the country last year, the central domicile registration office of the Interior Ministry revealed today.

What does it mean?

It means manly.

I was quite tickled by the name Somchai Boonmee, which translates into Manly Goodkarma. Quite cool actually.

Huh and there was me thinking it meant 'agreeable orange'.....ah well

I was talking to a Thai girl recently who said Somchai's an old-fashioned name and not really that popular any more. I guess the survey is more reliable though if they have actual stats.

As in 'na somjai' - different word...

Yeah, it sounds completely ancient..

Was this a survey for *new baby names* or most common names among men of any age?

Kind of like Mali for girls.. nobody is named that anymore. ;)
