FDA to crack down on illegal pharmacies

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will suspend the licenses of pharmacies that operate without an attending pharmacist and plans to amend a Public Health ministerial regulation to raise the quality and standard of drugstores.

The ministry has come under pressure to strictly implement the amended Drug Act to ensure all pharmacies have attending pharmacists, FDA chief Pipat Yingseri said yesterday, adding that the agency randomly checked drugstores regularly.

Out of 498 places in Bangkok checked in the past nine months, 16 had no pharmacist, eight sold potentially dangerous medicines in the absence of a pharmacist and 48 had improper lists of medicine purchases.

Pipat said the FDA had also submitted to the Council of State a regulation amendment to elevate drugstores' standards. The amendment included a provision to suspend the licences of law-breaking drugstores, and would create a database of places where pharmacists are available for consumers.

Members of the public can report law-breaking drugstores to the FDA by calling 1556.

And pray tell me what number can we call you report about corrupted or worsts still, stupid FDa officials?

The whole FDA department should be first kicked out.....maybe should provide more details to the public why a red short mob should be rallying outside the FDA to have them kicked out.

aaaaaaannnnnnnnddddddddd ..................... It's crackdown time again!

In the past 12 months, how many hubs or crackdowns have been successfully implemented?

Are we now a drug free society? We should be according to Chalerm.

Is the tourist mafia being quelled as we speak? Ah... No.

Is Suvarnaphum the new airline hub of Asia? Don't make me laugh!!!

Is Thailand the regional hub of flood control? Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha

How about Yingluck's crackdown on corruption? What? Sorry? Can't hear you!

Any success stories?

Yes, your question is stupid. The FDA has no mandate over the problem you speak of. It is a police matter.

The generic pills you think are useful are more often than not counterfeit or deficient in the necessary active ingredients.

I think that is a gross excaggeration. It's the cheap brand copies which are fake, like the Viagra sold at Sukhumvit stalls. Why would anyone create fake generic medicine when there's much more profit to be made making fake brand medicine? Generics are also the only way for many poor people to get their medicine. Like the Indians making generic cancer drugs which would otherwise never be available to 90% of Asians. I don't buy into the pharma companies claims that their R&D costs are so high that they need to take $50,000 for a months worth of cancer drugs.

Before the pharmacies pay the tea money or after....I was just at my local pharmacy today and was able to buy a number of items that I could not in my country without a prescription....non narcotics.

And I am a happy camper becase of that. Valium, Zanax....

When I told the pharmacist that Thai women were using the sleeping pills to drug foreign tourists and rob them. He told me that I should give them to Thai women and rape them.......I could not believe this, he said it in English with customers and a drug supplier in the store........Unbelievable.

Ah we are adults right? why is it the nanny states we come from USA Canada UK Aus NZ etc tell us we need to have Doctors prescribe us what we know we need. I myself will not take none of these mostly toxic drugs unless I absolutely have to. This is why I like living in Thailand I can go to a pharmacy & get what I feel I may need to get me through a rough time.

Cheers

GK, I think you are very correct on this matter. I have been into Pharmacies, where it is blatantly apparent that the person behind the counter has no idea as to what they are selling. One example, was asking for a sleep aiding medication, and being offered an anti depressant. These cowboys are dangerous.

Grab the little slip of paper inside the box and have a read what the stuff is actually meant to be used for.

Yes, they are VERY dangerous. Many have NO CLUE what they are selling and will even offer you drugs that you are not suppose to mix. I've even had thsi happen to me at the hospital, where I knew for a fact I wasn't suppose to mix one of the drugs they were giving me with another one I was already taking. Their reply, "Mr, believe me, no problem." The bottom line here is, you have to do your homework on every procedure you may have done and every drug they give you. Otherwise, they just may kill you. Between the lack of education, lack of paying attention, fake doctors, fake pharmacists, and their generally relaxed attitude, you are playing with fire if you trust them blindly.
